Upcoming SAGA releases
« on: March 29, 2013, 07:04:32 PM »
I saw this on the GB facebook page.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Gripping-Beast/196181460427546

First up, a new supplement for SAGA:
Quote
Debuting at SALUTE and on the website the same weekend, “Varjazi & Basileus” features a 12 page full colour rule booklet containing rules and lists for the Pagan Rus, the Era Of The Princes Rus and the Byzantines (as originally featured in Wargames Illustarted.) There is also a new Hero Of The Viking Age for the Byzantines and a new Swords For Hire unit.

The booklet also comes with 3 battleboards (Rus, Pagan Rus & BYZANTINES,) all contained in a fantastic SAGA folder. Made of sturdy cardboard, this folder is full colour (inside and out) and provides an excellent way to transport rulebooks, supplements and battleboards.  Varjazi & Basileus will be £12

Looks pretty cool, but it would have been nicer to have a 4th battleboard to go with it, especially considering the byzantines were already released a while back.  I do love the GB Rus figures though, and I have a few kicking around here somewhere...  A writeup from the designers about this supplement: http://mousquetstomahawks.blogspot.co.uk/ - apparently it will be the last supplement for the viking age (for the foreseeable future), though the blog says,

Quote
We will continue to support Saga, but forthcoming publications will drive us to new shores, taking new roads that we are keen to explore.

Next, GB with 4ground is releasing a MASSIVE Great Hall:

Though it has an equally massive price tag of £200 for Salute pre-orders, which is, apparently, considerably less than the final retail price.  I am not too impressed by that... sure it is massive, it might be able to fit 10 of those Saxon dwellings inside, but those Saxon buildings are £14 apiece, so 10 of them would only cost £140.  I don't need one that badly.  ;)

BLOODY HELL!!! You could put MY Saxon great hall in there and it would rattle around the pea in a whistle! It's a bit tasty, isn't it?

Mind you I think mine cost under a fiver to build lol
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

Not really impressed with the hall to be honest, especially not at that price...

Looking forward to the expansion though, the GB Rus are really nice miniatures.

What I've read (can't remember where though) the next period to be covered is the crusades, there are some mentions about it on the FB page too, but nothing official (that I know of at least)

Agreed! and how about a mid-late Roman Empire and or Roman Republic and Punic wars.
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

For 200 pounds I'll buy me some Grand Manner terrain that's more useful than a mead hall.  Nice idea, but priced well beyond its gaming utility.

I think it looks ace but a tad too expensive.

The Zulu farmhouse set was pretty pricey iirc.

Maybe they have to support all the orphaned teddy bears on this one. That is a LOT of fur....
Yearly painting challenges only show me how useless I am at painting...

My first thought was 'Meduseld' (LotR).

What material is it? If it's laser-cut wood, the production cost (apart from designing it) can't be THAT high?
Ask at the LAF, and answer shall thy be given!

For the complexity and size (think of all those scribe lines/beams etc) I don't think it's over priced at all.

Unfortunately comparing a number of smaller buildings with one of these doesn't quite work I'm afraid.

(I've got nothing to do with the people who made it I just work with lasers nearly every day).

I think it is gorgeous, and worth every bit. That being said, I won't be buying one, as it isn't big enough to actually house me when LadyAsbestos throws me out of my home...

Something like this would be more useful to me on the gaming table...

A Naval Brigade Command would indeed be useful, but crap for playing Beowulf. ;)
