« on: March 29, 2013, 07:36:24 PM »
Gents

just wondered if there is a decent book on the Wars of liberation in South
America......i know Terry hooker does some stuff....the information seems
very scattered. from about 1810 onwards ..including some of the really
tough ones between ..Brazil..Uruguay etc

cheers

All of the texts on Brazilian independence that I can think of are in Portuguese. Most of what action took place, happened in Bahia, which accounts for why another Independence Day is celebrated there on 2 July in addition to the national public holiday ofn September 7. Much of the more interesting stuff took place at sea so if you look at any one of the various biographies of Lord Cochrane you should find at least some detail. I used to live a couple of blocks from a Rua Lord Cochrane as it happens. The lovable Scottish pirate, is well thought of thereabouts. :D

Now if you are looking at the Cisplatine War, the war that essentially gave us modern day Uruguay, then there is one text that is absolutely beyond compare, Tasso Fragoso's  A Batalha do Passo do Rosário. It's the Brazilian Army's 1922 staff study of the war and it has everything you would ever need to know about it, including OB's maps and diagrams of the battles. Alas, it is both rare and in Portuguese. I picked up my copy in an antiquarian bookshop in Salvador a few years ago for a song but that was rare good luck. If you wanted details like OB's etc  I'd be happy to give you them. Someone really should translate this work because it not only covers the war in depth but also gives excellent details on the various Spanish -Brazilian conflicts in the 18th century.

If you are just looking for uniform details, then your best bet is to look at Gustavo Barosso's seminal work, Uniformes do Exercito brasileiro, 1730-1922. Again rare, last copy I looked at was a mint copy in the region of $1200 USD Fortunately the whole thing, including all the colour plates are available online from the University of Toronto:

John has a few books covering these conflicts, as well as a range of 15mm figures and Parkfield Miniatures has a growing range of 28mm figures
