thank you for your help. If anyone owns Fenryll 3 stages minis, please let us know about their scale too.

Hi,

Searching on internet for ral partha 3 stages characters, some of them reminded me something...Something old I remembered in my early days in the miniatures hobby...

...So I went to my gaming room, and search in my minis wreck...And found a complete 3 stages cleric  :o

After stripping the paint and rebasing it (to match my monsters collection, mostly only D&D minis), here's some almost 20 years old figures  :-*

Details of each figure :

And some scale comparison (you'll maybe find this kind of information interesting) :

d&d miniature drows (from dungeon command drow army set) :

note that D&D minis scale can vary, some of them are a way bigger...it's especially annoying for humans (the usual trick is to rebase them), for other races, it's OK...after all anyone saw a real orc to compare his size, for example  lol)

metal magic (like the ones on megaminis website fantasy range, correct me if I'm wrong) :

urban mammoth :

So I would say these ral partha miniatures are compatible with most of the "true 28mm" or "not so heroic 28mm" miniature ranges.

You're right. It's also what I thought in first place, buying some similar (or even identical) minis and customize them with GS.

But after all...If I can find ready to play collectible minis like these venerable ral partha pieces...I'll save some time for other projects.

You don't have to rely on old castings, either.  Ral Partha Europe still produce these three-stagers, as do Ironwind in North America.  Citadel came up with the idea of the three-stage character, but sadly abandoned the concept along with the loss of the AD&D license.  Luckily other companies like Ral Partha took the idea and made it their own.

And yet, they didn't apply it to their own AD&D line.  Odd, that.

Sundayhero and LeadAsbestos are quite right.  I too acquired the RP 3-stage Druid when this range first came out, and the figures are a good match for reasonable-sized "28mm" figures.

this set is wild  :o

I'm also searching on the megaminis metalmagic range, since the metalmagic mini I have is very compatible with ral partha ones (as seen before). A lot of figures can be used (with minor customization, often no modification at all) in 3 stages characters too. I found many classes (monk, druid, wizard, cleric, soldier, rogue, assassin, etc...) with matchin weapons, diferent stages of armor (from panties to full plate armor  lol), etc...

Fenryll's figures tend to be bloody huge though, well along the 35mm line.

The Ral Partha 3 stage were Tom Meier sculpts. Top class sculpting at the time and still now. I have them all from way back  in a er..... unpainted lead pile  :D

That's why I'll go for other brands, I believe. I prefer true 28mm figures.

Hello Sundayhero, here are some pics for comparison:

Here we have from left to right, a Ral Partha 3 stage Paladin (WIP), Preslotta Citadel Fighter, Grenadier Knight, Metal Magic Knight, and a Citadel Slotta Paladin (doh! Facing the wrong way!).

Personally, I think they all fit very well together. I think you should buy the Ral Partha miniatures and get on the old school bandwagon. You may not find all three on an auction on Ebay, you will usually find them as singles.
(I haven't checked, does Ral Partha Europe sell them together in a blister?).

Cheers,
 Damien
