Wargs Attack - LOTR Conversion work
« on: April 05, 2013, 02:36:32 PM »
With the come back of Peter jackson's trilogy, that's give me back the taste work on my mountain of LOTR figurines that sleeping in their box for some years now.

So let's start with a set of 6 Wargs from the old generation   :D. But with the raising prices from GW and with that strange business politic of reduce the number of figurines in each box for the same price.......i'm not volunteer to throw away my money to get the new ones.  ;)

My goal is to give more animation to the actual poses from the original box set. Most of the wargs here have the torso cut in half and/or the head cut off to swap with each others. that's give a good amount of active poses.
Here is the beasts :

one base with a warg fighting a Gondor Ranger : The ranger's arm will be fit in the mouth of the warg. Done with a Mantic ghoul/Zombie arm for the purpose. The hand 'll be outside the mouth.

One base with a conversion of wounded isildur (metal) converted into elf (plastic head). The warg 'll be pin on the elf sword showing the aggressive fight between them.

by, now it's time to go on paintwork !

The painting is nearly done for the Wargs. The victims aren't.
i'll post the wargs pics in a few hours. One of them, painted as a leader of the pack on a white/grey tone .  ;D

First- I love conversions as it makes unique models that we have never seen before
Second - to do it well takes skill and an "eye" so it looks right and adds to the original (different is not the same as better)

Third - well there is no third as you have done 'first' and 'second' and have managed to increase the fierceness and savagery of the wargs.

I salute you as a skilled, inventive, and tasteful modeller. :o

thanks a lot for your comments.
In conversion (in 15mm as in 28mm), my goal is to get a easy way to convert a figurine into something new or neither seen. I'm not a sculptor. Too boring for me (and too long). I'm a Re-animator ! I give a new life to a figurine throught a new pose or a new destination.  lol

As we buy all the same figurines produced in mass, you have to give yours, something special to make them "unique" and knows as yours !
At a skirmish level it's easy but when your have to convert 150 to 200 15mm figurines to built up an original army, it's an another story. i have done it in the past but now my hobby time is very reduced. Even, if my conversion work can be done in a couple of minutes for some pieces like the dwarf balista ! That simple and easy when you have a very close idea about the goal you want to reach.

Be aware, more topics to follow about this kind of conversion  ;)

The wargs are painted !

The pack's leader (or Alpha) and a subordinate.

tHe leader is reanimated to be original and base on a rock designed for him.

Two "simple" wargs

The fighting warg vs the Ranger put in their futur pose on the base. the ranger is base on a small rock to be at the same level to the warg mouth. It's the simple answer to this problem. The ranger left leg is cut off and reglue in a another position to fill better the situation of a guy crushed by a massive jaw like one of a warg...(i imagine).

The dying warg vs the elf to give you an idea of the pose i want to show on the final base.

The most difficult work is done. I only have to paint the ranger and the elf, and base all the pack to go in action.   :-*

Enjoy the result !

After the warg alone, i suggest you to catch the feeling about the fight between Aragorn and Sarku, the orc leader of the vanguard skirmishing against the king Theoden and his followers en route to the helm's deep.
My objectif here is to give the animation all the epic of the fight needed to represent the Aragorn and Sarku. Who'll survive this hand-to-hand to death.... :'(

As usual, the simplest the conversion is, better it'll be  lol

Here it is the result :

This is really interesting. May I suggest to switch off the flash when taking photos? They are a little tto bright and the flash is killing off lots of details (which is a shame).

and now, the cheap version of :

The same idea for the fight between Aragorn and sarku, leader of the Orc vanguards :

You just need a plastic warg (LOTR edition) and an Aragorn (from the wethertop box). The sword is reduced to a dagger size and the torch is cut off to convert into the leather strap.
The warg is equiped with a saddle made from a plastic sprue.  lol

that give us (sorry for the f... flash !) :

Very nice conversions, lots of movement and adding a story.
