Black and White Painting Scheme
« on: May 01, 2013, 01:42:10 PM »
An idea struck me the other day and I was wondering if anyone had attempted it.

Pulp has alot of roots in Black and White. Has anyone ever tried to paint a League or even just a figure in greyscale? Done right, I think it would look amazing, but done wrong, well....

So anyone tried it? Anyone up to the challenge?

I know I've seen it done, a couple times. Don't know if anyone's done it for pulp though, Seen it used in a blade-runner style Film Noir game and also a Zorro game on these boards. Don't see why you couldn't do that for pulp.

Yup, there are folks doing this and doing it well. I remember seeing some on a blog recently, so I'll try hunting it down again for you.

There was a WW1 one recently. Can't for the life of me remember where it was though.

Not pulp, admittedly, but this thread should give you some idea of how effective black & white paint schemes can be:

http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=3846.180

It's a pretty long thread so jump straight to pg.7 for some of the painted figures in all their gloomy glory.

I'm pretty sure there are some B&W 30's gangster threads on here too somewhere, they really looked top notch. If you're brave enough to give it a try yourself I'd love to see what you come up with as I've often been tempted to do a B-movie style sci-fi game in B&W.
...and what fresh new hell is this?

Can't believe it's been five years already since I did these: http://carmensminiaturepainting.blogspot.com/2008/03/black-and-white-world.html
All others followed ;)
And everyone else did a helluva lot better job than me :)

My favorites include the Nosferatu game already mentioned, and Curt's Great War in Greyscale:

I like his use of warm and cool grays as well as how he picks out single colors to mark officers/leaders:

I'm also partial to those who are daring enough to paint up everything (figures, vehicles, accessories and terrain) in black and white. You have to be bold to go that far, but I think it's well worth it.

... and these Seven Samurai by Michael Awdry:
http://analogue-hobbies.blogspot.ca/2013/02/from-michaela-seven-samurai-in.html ... because hey, they're the seven samurai!

A friend off mine did some black and white gangsters - not sure if he was going to do more with them.

I remember seeing a B&W gangster thread here a few years back. It looked great. I did one Malifaux character  a few years ago - Little girl and I wanted her to look like Wednesday Aadams. B&W was the only way to go for that figure and I've seen it copied a few times too.
Below is a link to my blog. It's the place where I write uninteresting things about little toy soldiers. I do this because I refuse to grow up and behave like an adult.
