I wanted to keep him the same "viking" look he had in intermediate stage, but with better gear and some kind of "dignity"...Like a viking dwarf lord

I modified the beard and added horns and fur coat to make them more recognizable.

Love what you did the 3rd stage mods!  he does look much more majestic with the long fur cloak. I like the way you seemingly attach the cloak with the existing shoulder plates.

Can't wait to see the painted pics!

I likes it. Looking good. The only thing i have issue with is the shield. Especially for the viking feel i would have liked to see a big round shield bigger than the middle stage. Would keep the theme straight for the whole progression. Plus the shield is smaller than the 2nd stage. It all looks good and is great for a stand alone. Keep it up and cant wait to see it painted. :-)

Yes, I know for the shield, I was lazy on this and didn't make the conversion. I had another spare dwarf with round shield, but he had it on his back, so I could not make the fur coat. But after all, vikings were known to take weapons from enemies, so we can imagine that dwarf took that gear on a dead enemy...Or simply found it in a treasure room (after all, he's supposed to be a dungeon crawling archetype adventurer).

That is an EXCELLENT bit of conversion; the cloak is IMPRESSIVE, as are the additions to the beard & the horns...I'm actually the most impressed by the cap on the ax. GREAT WORK!

The shield may be a bit on the twinky side, but it could be MAGICAL...if you paint it that way.

Now I'm thinking about 2 possibilities :

Converting the current shield, with sculpted thing on it

removing the typical knight shield and replace it with a round one...



But now  the idea of a "shield issue" is in my head and growing  


It's what I like in these old school minis : they are well sculpted, but with enough room for own creativity. The new figures on markets doesn't appeal me that much because of their complexity. Modern minis often (not always hopefully) reminds me late 19th century-early 20th century academic art. Perfection in execution and technic, but often with something hard to define lost in the process.

Vintage minis remind me Goya or the impressionists. Technic (even if it's here with no doubt) is behind the subject and the feeling given to the viewer.


Maybe that comparison sounds weird...   But LAF is the forum I think I can share my funny theories

I would agree with your theory of more modern minis. There is a  tendency toward being too serious with the newer stuff; as a consequence, while achieving a higher level of perfection/realism, they forfeit the charm & personality of the vintage fantasy pieces. There are, of course, exceptions to this.
I gravitate toward the surrealistic, cartoonish, & strange...disturbingly silly  is the way for moi.

Yes. if yopu wanted to "Go Silly" You could paint a "+1" (or "+3" even) on the shield, establishing it's 'bona fide' magical status.

human ranger
dwarf fighter (axeman)
human fighter (female, sword)
elve fighter mage
human fighter (axeman, probably can be used as a knight)
human cleric
halfeling thief

I completely missed this thread until now, and it's a great project!
Those Ral Partha miniatures are nice, and your conversions made those figures even better.
I'm looking forward to seeing them painted.

Better late than never, here's my first painted ral partha miniature, a beginner stage dwarf warrior :







I also finished some plastic D&D monsters I started a while ago, for my solo adventures bestiary, I'll make some pics if any interest.


I hope I'll paint the next ones faster. Even if the mini is apparently simple, the tricky thing is to find some "realistic" paint schemes matching the mini style. Some very fine details (like the paded leather armor) are a bit hard to paint too, at least for my tabletop painter skills.
