Reaper Adveturing Warriors
« on: May 28, 2013, 05:28:34 PM »
This was a quick commission of gaming-level figures, a couple of barbarians and two armored baddies. These were done in a wash-heavy style, with zenith priming to get their shading started first - black prime, then white from steep angles all around the figure. Base coats were light tones only, thinned a bit so the primer shadows would show through. Then dark inks were used (Liquitex) to do the shadows and colors. GW Ogryn flesh was used for the flesh, as I like the color and did not feel like making it from inks. Then highlights were with opaque paint, on edges mainly as the shading and blending was done by the inks and priming.

It is mainly just technique in prep with the priming, and then clean application of the ink glazes. Maybe the skill part is the edge lining, so that is not so easy, but it is just practice.

You're far too humble.  But your results speak for themselves.
Very nice work.  The evil knight is particularly creepy.

On the "Game Quality Miniatures" my erstwhile friend Larry had the definitive example: with his Napoleonic French, an Infantryman had a mustache or a mouth, but not both.
That aside, the Adventures look WONDERFUL! I love your choice of colors; AND your brushwork & basing are SPLENDID. GREAT WORK!

Nice work there and a bit above gaming level I'd say  ;)

What is edge lining ?

edge lining is simply painting a highlight on the edge of objects. There are a couple of ways of doing this, but the end result is a light edge that helps define sections of the figure. See the strap on the barbarian's chest for an example, plus the highlights on the holes of the female barbarians cloak.

Stunning!
What a great result.
 :-*

In some areas you can see the technique, but only because you have stated it.
I would not have noticed otherwise.

I have tried this before, but only with Daemons.
I was going to try it on my Mordor Orcs to speed up the process.
I know that they wont come out anywhere near as good as this, though.
Might still try it though....
