Mysterious Jungle Ruins (Now on CD!)

Mysterious Overgrown Jungle Ruin! Now Available on CD!

Sculpey oven-bake craft clay, a couple of scrap CDs that were cluttering my desk, some scrap cardboard, and lots of flocking, ballast & scenic foam out of my terrain building box.

The mysterious crudely-carved head at the rear and the ominious platform in the foreground are straight Sculpey. Sophisticated modelling tools included my fingers and half a toothpick.

And once again, too damn dark. I did shoot these at night under room lighting; I'll try and re-shoot some better pics under daylight in a few days.


Non-mysterious production of not-yet-overgrown ruins

Slightly better lit, but more noticably out of focus - a Work-In-Progress shot from a few days ago of the two ruin CDs, painting done but landscaping hardly begun.

That's a 28mm Pulp Figures aviatrix in both photos. She's useful, in blue she shows up much better in photos than all my guys in dark brown leather or khaki hunting gear!

Sculpey is great fun to work with; it's expensive in the little blocks but if you buy a big 2lb box of the plain white it's cheap - you don't need much to do cool stuff with it.

You can never have too many crates for scenery. Here's the start of my 28mm pulpish crate collection...


Crates, anyone?

Wooden craft cubes from the local Michael's, glued together in stacks & piles, then stained various shades of brown & drybrushed. Haven't bothered with details - they're sketches of crates rather than detailed models, really. I might put some waybills on the tops and sides for colour & detail, though.

Yes, it's the aviatrix in blue again. Expect to get tired of seeing her in my scenery & WIP shots!

I have just recently started using the CDs for mounting ofr terrain.  I had not considered using them for ruins, but now I will be.

I'm quite impressed with CDs as scenery bases, actually.

After using cardboard or foamcore for so long, it's a huge relief to have a scenery base I can saturate with as much glue/paint/ink/water/etc as I like without having to worry about warping!

Sculpey's nice for that too - once it's baked, it doesn't seem to be affected by water.

I started using those back in the late 90's when AOL was sending 3-4 of the bloody things to your apartment every week - and they were just the right size for the carboard bits of terrain the came in the 2nd edition Warhammer 40k boxed set. Voila!

CDs are fantastically useful bases. I also find them to be the only sort of blast template that I can tolerate - after all, nobody remembers to bring the nineteen kinds of flamer/artillery/cannister round/mortar/thudd gun templates, but everyone has spare CDs on hand.

My biggest problem is finding enough junk CDs. Haven't got a CD in the mail in years.

Well, I buy them at less than ½ a Euro from my wife's working place... I don't even bother searching for scrap ones  ::
