Help needed with painting corroded copper/brass effect
« on: April 21, 2013, 08:42:23 PM »
Hi all,

I'm looking for advice or a tutorial on achieving the effect of corroded copper or brass. This sort of thing:

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Don't!

Not sure if this picture really shows the effect properly, but I took inspiration from a similarly corroded pipe in one of the boiler rooms at work:

I got this effect by doing the following:

Painted the whole thing in the 'bronze' metallic colour first.
A wash of watered down white paint was added to the area that i wanted to 'corrode'.
Leave to dry thoroughly and then added a few spots of whit paint for really bright areas.
Then put a wash of turquoise paint that had been lightened with white.
This settles nicely on top of the white, which increases its brightness.
Then a standard turquoise was washed on top, in the middle leaving edges of lighter coulour.
Then a slighly darker, duller turquoise was added in areas.

Then neatened up with the bronze colour again.

Basically like 'reverse' washes, putting the lighest colour on first instead of the darkest.
Make sure that you put the white layer on first, it is the most important step.

Dunno if that helps, TC,  but that is what I did......

Whilst at SALUTE saw the guys from Modelmates showing how to use their liquid rust and verdi gris, extremely effective (I was blown away by the final results looked just like the real thing) cant find the verdi gris on their site so linked you to the rust liquid, definitely worth contacting them

That.
I went to their stand for the Rust Effect, but when I saw that Verdigris Effect, I immediatly bought a bottle of it too. (now to find something to use it on...)

Just had a look at the rust effect on that link, it looks good. A verdigris effect in the same style would be great. I may have to get some!

I saw this Modelmates stuff at Salute too. There is no doubt it looks  most authentic. You would easily be fooled into thinking it was the real thing. I was very taken with their products when I saw them last year but was too scared to try a new technique. This year I have relented and bought some to try on resin buildings. Thank goodness they dont sell double glazing, they could have sold me that!

I just paint it using a base colour of a mix of black and turquoise, highlighting in several steps with white and apply white/turquoise wash in strokes (you can then drybrush bare metal coluor on the edges if need be):

Timely question, up that Salute I spoke to Modelmates who have just released their single pot verdi gris effect... worth a look.

Single pot? Does it go over a paintjob like a wash or is it a paint?
So many projects..... so little time.......

Not sure, they told me about it, showed an example but I don't need that effect at the moment... maybe email them via their site and ask.

Thanks for the advice chaps!  Very helpful as ususal  :)

Mason & Michi, they are nifty paint jobs. mason, what bronze did you use?

I've exchanged a few e-mails with Alan at Modelmates and the new verdi gris hasn't been released to stockists yet, however a pot is on its way so I'll let you know how I get on with it.

I didnt use bronze, as I dont have any.
I think this was Natural Steel with Flat Brown Gold.
Highlighted by adding a touch of Silver.
All Vallejo paints.

Stunning painting and photography, Michi!

I don't if its any help, but this was done with GW paints.

Step 1-undercoat with skull white spray

Step2-paint the whole thing in Dwarf Bronze

Step3-wash with a Dark Flesh/chaos Black 3:1 mix(add enough water to make the mix the constistancy of milk. Also add a dab of Washing up liquid to break the water surface tension)P.s you can also drybrush the mix, without water/washing up liquid into the lower recesses to give a darker shadow.

Step4-dry brush Shining gold on the upper areas of panels.

Step5-dry brush Hawk Turquiose into the higher up recesses. You can also drybrush faint lines down as if water has dripped.

Step6-use Mitheril Silver as an edge highlight

Step7-job done. Step back. Have beer. Admire work!

If its big areas, they might benifit some scratches. Just apply some Mitheril Silver dots and small crooked lines at random, then paint the Dark Flesh/Chaos Black mix on top of them, leaving only a small line of silver along the bottom.

Hope that helps bud!
