For rules have a look at Tusk by Irregular Miniatures.

http://www.irregularminiatures.co.uk/indexes/miscindex.htm

They are designed for dinosaur/mammouth hunting, so should be perfect for what you are looking for.

Lots of fun, I saw them being played at last years GLAM. Matakishi did a report on his blog:

So, Raquel Welch with a dozen other fur bikini clad wenches/females carried in a cardboard box with several dinosaurs?  :P  ;D

maybe.......

more likely Raquel Welch wearing a box (my boring static painting technique) being chased by plastic kiddy toys.... :D

I am going to write my own rules - each player will command a few cavemen and the dinos will move instinctively.

I sketched out some designs for the box last night - its going to be part of the desert terrain, and will open up like a ??? Well the sides top and bottom will all be the gaming board.

OK - quick update:

1.  the ‘box’ will become the playing surface for this friendly game of cavemen. Sketches to follow.

The base of the box would form the centre of the gaming surface, with the sides once folded down form a series of spokes facing outwards. Four triangular pieces stored loose in the box would give the board its final octagonal shape. Each of bases would be contoured and textured with fixed terrain.  The box itself will be constructed from timber with hinges holding the sides to the base. The top lid once placed over the box will hold it all together.

The base of the box will be dominated by a volcano (hollow of course so things can be stored inside)

The objective of the game will be for cavement to escappe from their valley and migrate around the board to the new valley. On route they must collect fire, flints, furs, and food. At the same time they must avoid random dinosaurs, other players, and every so often the volcano will erupt causing a random lava flow.

Imagine this as a game of Ludo (with some skill)

Although the rules are yet to be written I have decided that the board will be covered in zones like a chess board . These zones will form the movement and firing distances – eg a figure can move 3 zones in one action, a spear can be thrown 4 zones etc. I have yet to decide how these zones will be depicted but I am sure that I will come up with an answer.

It does rather. I hadn't even considered making the box part of the terrain.

Must admit when I first saw the ideas mentioned I thought was a "game in a box" where the box was the terrain...

I will be doing something similar, Giles, but my box will form the board, not terrain.
 ;)

Love the hollow volcano idea, by the way.
Mine shall have mountains involved but yours has the much more cool version of a mountain.

If my plan gets off the ground (a small clue is hidden there) ;), the box will be an integral part of the terrain.

The box is now built - using specifications set

Constructed from 12mm MDF - it weighs a tonne  >:(

As you can see the playing area is a cross - this will eventually be octagonal when I cut out the triangle pieces

cheers

Eric
