Hello from a newbie
« on: April 26, 2013, 02:01:57 AM »
My name is Anne O'Leary and I painted my first miniature in March of last year. I discovered the world of miniatures by following some very nice wargamers on blogger. My immediate reaction when I saw that first wargaming figure was "I must learn to do this" I spent one year following gamers and painters, studying their work and asking questions. These lovely men were kind and patient, answering my questions and oftentimes writing tutorials for me. I have never met another painter or gamer in real life because my husband is quite ill and requires full time care. The online community of gamers and painters have been so kind that they have made my life bearable. I am forever in their debt.

To give you an idea of where I am at in my development as a painter I thought I should post a picture of my work.

This figure is from Dark Sword Miniatures and was sculpted by Jeff Grace for the George RR Martin Masterworks collection.

Please be patient with me as I learn to navigate my way around the forum.

Thank you.

My results after painting for a year were much worse. This is really an outstanding paintjob, Anne.
If I spot that correctly you are doing a very subtle drybrushing for highlighting, don´t you? If so, this is one of the best I´ve seen yet.

Yes, after I've gotten the shading done, I do a drybrush on the highest points.  Thank you so much for the compliment.

Hi Anne.

Your painting skills are by far superior of most gamers I regularly play with, and most of them have 15+ years experience!

Of course, they paint a lot of minis for armies, but even command groups don´t get to your level.

In my experience, female painters usually show an attention to detail that a man hardy achieves.

So WELL DONE with your mini, and I hope to see much more of your work in the future.

I wish you and your family (specially your husband) health and prosperity.

Welcome to LAF.

May you have a long and merry stay with us.
I know you're too old to play with toy soldiers. So give them to me... NOW!

The only previous experience I have as an artist is portraiture. I used to do portraits for people in charcoals when I was a teen, but that's been ages ago.

That's nice work. I am not sure I can help you much,a s I have been painting for nearly thirty years, and yours are much better than mine. Welcome anyway, as I am sure you will mind many great painters on this forum who will be able to help.

Have you ever thought about painting on commission for others? I'm sure that work like yours would bring top dollar.
