High Medieval skirmish rules?
« on: May 03, 2013, 08:57:17 AM »
Having read the post on Cry Havoc! I wondered if there were any current rules for table top for games up to say 50 figures per side for this period? Looking for bags of flavour and a bit of characterisation for the leaders.

Many thanks

Nick

I think there is a rule variant for Dux Britaniarum coming but I'm not sure how far away it is. I think if you search for Dux Suecia you will find AARs.

Lord of the Rings the skirmish set might work, focus on heroic leaders and can handle that number of figures.

Strategy Battle Game is the skirmish set.

GW LotR is their core skirmish set so you'll find it at the heart of most of their skirmish sets.

Lord of the Rings
Mordheim
Necromunda
Legends of the Old West
Legends of the High Seas
Gladiator
Etc.

You can still get the basic rules for free here : http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat480008a&categoryId=6700006a&section=&aId=21500021a

Won't be too hard to strip out the fantasy elements and slot in Medieval flavours.

I just remembered there's a yahoo group who do variants to the skirmish set.

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/LOTRvariants/

The PDF 'Age of Trebuchets' is a good starting point, i've used them late Medieval skirmishes.

Mordheim and Necromunda use a different system to the LotR rules.

Wow  :o - I had almost forgotten that - I wrote it in 2005.

Thanks for recommending it. :)

Since we are talking about LOTR skirmish, Is there any difference between the old rules and the new "Hobbit" rules?
"Peace" is that brief, glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading.

Really?   ??? ???

Because i've got and played all of them and they look pretty much like the same rules to me...

Sure each of these have slightly different elements, levels of complexity and source-related tweaks, but they're all basically 'Warhammer Skirmish' derivatives.

Here another vote for Lord of the Rings!

We use it frequently and think it works very well for our late 15th c games.

In the comments to our latest AAR (found here http://northern-wargaming.blogspot.se/2013/04/aar-sanctuary-15th-century-skirmish.html)  I explained in a bit more detail on how we use LotR for our games.

The rules we use are Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game that have models bases individually (i e for large skrimishes) and not the War of the Rings rule set that in effect use multibased "companies" with eight figures on a base. We use the older version and hasn't bothered to buy the Hobbit version (that as far as I know have some alterations on monsters etc).

And quick a word on the rules themselves. In my view it is a bit different from the ususal GW game mechanics. For instance it uses a system of "priority" i e who goes first each turn. You can override that given turn sequence by using a limited amount of "heroic actions". That system, that isn't used in for instance Mordheim or Necromunda (the latter being an exellent game though) although simple encourage and reward tactical gaming. Great fun!

Depending on how you compose your forces you can use very few models (like "the fellowship") or put together quite large forces.

Again using our latest game as an example here are pictures of the two opposing forces we had on the table. It isn't a problem to use much larger forces aswell - including the numbers you mentioned.

Happy gaming!

There was a 13th century tweak to Legends a while back done by Sgt.Perry that looked good and could easily fit into the 14th century as well. It is practically Mordheim in the Middle Ages.

I spoke to a guy in Gamesworkshop the last time is was in England and i got to look through the rulebook. Main additions are special rules for weapons, monsters and some new heroic actions (i think). I think they might have redone how spears work  ??? Nothing major. I use the old rules that i bought off ebay for a couple of pounds rather than the new monster rulebook.
