Weird Science Romans
« on: May 06, 2013, 07:46:27 PM »
I mentioned in another thread that I am going to be running a weird science Roman game at Historicon.  I've posted on my blog pictures of some of the models that will be used:

Fantastic. This twist is a nice one that I'm sure many are going to love.

there was a series of books you might want to reference. Alternate history where the empire survives. I believe they end up fighting the aztecs in one of the books. As for the name I have no idea but they are out there. Of course one of the well read talented chaps here will help us out with the name of the series.

Kirk Mitchell's "Germanicus". Basically, no martyred Jesus in 33AD leads to Roman colonies in North America by the 19th century AD and mujahideen attacking roman trains in Asia Minor. Plus Romans with steam-powered warships and tanks. Not a bad read, although I cannot comment on the original, having only read a German translation.

@topic: Nice stuff! That airship is quite well done!

Also the 'Romanitas' series has much the same idea - the empire survives, Christians remain obscure/die out, and technology is at a near future level due to unbroken development.

Wiki - spoilers!

I’ve read the Mitchell trilogy.  In the US, it was caller the “Procurator” series.  It was pretty good, especially the second book that deals with the war between the Romans and Aztecs

There’s also the Aquiliad trilogy by Somtow an alt-history about Romans using steam power to get to the Americas which are fun reads but more of a satire than serious sci-fi.

There’s also the Roma Eterna series of short stories by Robert Silverberg but I found those a bit dull and don’t really explore what a surviving Rome would be like.

I've heard of the Romanitas series but never read it.

Very nice, and linking it back to historical items makes it more believable. Also like your take on leaders in game - sometimes they're good... sometimes they think they're good.

LOL I knew what that wacky mirrored contraption was the minute I saw it (everyone else: it's a solar powered "heat ray").  It'd never work, but that's why it's WEIRD science, right? ;)
