German Infantry uniforms for Italy 43/44...help please
« on: May 07, 2013, 08:44:27 PM »
Putting together a few 15mm German infantry platoons in 15mm for use in Italy during the 43/44 period and wondering what uniforms were worn in the field. Any  information be great.

Also wondering if camo shelter type clothing was worn and if great coats were issued to German troops in Italy?

A bit of everything was worn depending upon season and region in Italy. Summer months in the southern end, tropical uniforms were the norm. Cooler months further up the boot, wool was in use. Regardless, you can't go wrong with wool on your army. Wool great coats were issued when inducted so they too were worn. The German army operated no different than any others, as items were not needed and impaired unit mobility, they were collected and stored at the company or higher level and redistributed as ordered.

The most commonly available camouflage clothing item period, was the shelter quarter. While prestigious or favored units recieved factory made clothing, the zeltbahn was always available to everyone. Keep in mind that wearing one for camouflage reduces mobility, hampers access to equipment, and increases body heat. All of these drawbacks could theoretically explain why it is seldomn seen in photos.

Thank you for the information :)

Have been looking for online images of German infantry in Italy and most I can find show POW's rather than infantry on campaign and these show them in tunics and soft caps but imagine a lot of combat equipment had been removed when captured or thrown away just prior. I have a good mix of Peter Pig and 1944 period German infantry from Skytrex but also have PP miniatures in great coats and quite a few in Zeltbahn with rifles and MP 40's.

Have been looking for images showing German infantry on campaign in Italy but so far my searches have given fairly poor results and it would be great if anyone knows of any online sources which show good photos of the period and any links would be fantastic as I really like to capture the feel of the period in my wargames units.

Thank you for the help once again and any help with links that anyone could supply  :)
