An idiot's guide to Sharpe Practice rules
« on: May 28, 2013, 07:45:06 PM »
Hi,I have had these rules along with the complete Fondler for some time now but never used them.I would like to as I enjoy the humor evident throughout The Two Fat  Lardies writings and know they are a popular ruleset, and with the new Mutiny supplement on the horizon I would like to get up and running, so to speak. However,I would like to know if there are any articles giving a  simple run through of the rules, sort of "a dummies guide to sharp practice".Or even a "lite" version for beginners. Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Geoff's suggested video is the best tutorial available.  :)

I use Sharp Practice for our Indostan games and do admit at first glance the rules are a little hard to comprehend.

I suggest trying a game out first, they become clearer once played. You can see all our games on my blog:

I think you'll find the rules are worth while in the end. If you need to ask specific questions I'd be happy to help - just post away.

As Furt says they are hard to get your head around by just reading through them.

I found the two videos on YouTube very, very useful.

Furt's Indostan games inspired me to keep focused on SP.

Now they are my rule set of choice and have npbeen adapted for VSF and currently Robin Hood medieval skirmishes.

What all the others said.
Played my first game of SP just the other day, despite the fact that I'd bought the rules on release, well, years ago. It simply looked too daunting a task. That's not helped by the rules being not very well laid out or beginner-friendly (partly due to some uncommon concepts). But once you've played a couple of turns you get the hang of it very quickly.

May I also recommend joining the TFL Yahoo Group, if just to download the Adapted QRS. Essentially I ran the entire game from it, for it covers some more rules than the QRS on the back of the rulebook.

My first words to new players is this:

The terms "Initiative" and "Action Dice" are very confusing. I use Orders, Actions and Activations.

Big Men, when activated by the draw of their card, get a number of Orders (not "Initiatives") based on their level. They can use these Orders to activate themselves or other Units.

When a Unit is activated, they get 2 Actions (not Action Dice). An Action can be to move (1d6"), reload, etc.

A Unit can only be Activated once per turn (or round, or once through the card deck).

Constructing your card deck is another matter.  Again, it sounds confusing but isn't once you've played a few games.

Like others have said, check out the videos for starters. Then join the TFL Yahoo Group. Plenty of help there.

I thought they were developing an AWI set/supplement?  I didn't see it on the site and would consider it for something that interests me such as AWI.

Although I prefer games above skirmish level for the most part, which they seem to be moving towards along with skirmish.

Gracias,

Glenn
