Need ideas for B.M.A.P. adventure set in the Black Forest
« on: April 28, 2008, 09:00:42 PM »
I've decided the next leg of my B.M.A.P. campaign will involve a trek through the Black Forest in Southwest Germany.  My B.M.A.P. game is taking place just after The Great War and it has a lot of paranormal elements.
In my current campaign agents of La Brigade Mobile Des Affaires Paranormales or B.M.A.P. are trying to track down a band of Friekorps hired by the Thule Society who have awaken and captured a French vampire.  Their next task will be trekking through the Black Forest in search of a hidden Thule Society manor where they have hidden the vampire.  I’d like to add a few nasty creatures or spirits that might make the trek through the woods more interesting.  Anyone have any suggestions that might be particularly appropriate for the Black Forest region?

Would go for wolves and the more hairy human type possibly... what about the ghosts of Varus's Roman legions, okay not strictly the correct area but maybe they fought their way clear in the initial ambushes, but persihed lost and alone in the dark forbidding forests, Their souls forever walking the earth looking to regain their lost eagle, and thier honour.

How come the THule society... just wondering as I live on the isles of Thule, our newly formed wargames and Roleplaying club is the THule gamers.. Is there something I should know? I have only been up here 2 years so maybe I am not party to the secrets yet....

The storys (fairytales) from the "Collection of Grimm Brothers" may be some nice resorce. As far as I remeber they did a Cthulhu-scenario around the story of the "Frog King" with Deep Ones involved.

Some old Roman or Celt Mystery should work as well as tatda: witches and werewolfs.

This reminds me of a graphic novel I read several years ago.

http://theblackforest.net/theblackforest/

Involves a WWI pilot looking for a secret base in the Black Forest.  Very cinematic.  Plenty of monsters and stuff.  Might give you some ideas if you decide to check it out.

Sounds promising as do a lot of the other suggestions so far!

Here's a few ideas, don't know if they fit the Black Forrest area, but they might fit the flavor.

1.  Perhaps a nice old lady living in a secluded house made of candy will invite the heroes in for dinner.

Or...perhaps either Hansel or Grettel will escape and seek assistance from the brave operatives of the B.M.A.P.

Either RAFM or Ral Partha made a nice old hag and Hansel and Grettel miniatures.

2.  A mad, crazed Poacher could be looking for more challenging game.  Think Deliverence with a pulp twist.

3.  An alchemist hiding out in the Forest has a hoard of his creations under his command.  They will stop at nothing to maintain the secret of their existance.

It's always hard to picture the rather gentle hills of the Black Forrest as a spooky place - however, I admit the name could conjure up these ideas. I like this idea of Roman ghosts. As a kid (back in 1980 or so) I spent a vacation in the Black Forrest and in the town (the name of which has just slipped my mind) there was a large park and in the middle of that park stood ruins of an ancient Roman bath. Whenever I would walk past them in the dark they looked rather spooky to me. And I remember some ghost comic I read about that time in which an archeologist met an old Roman ghost in some ruins. So it all fell together.

Traditionally the idea of werewolves sound good as well. And there is an old cthulhu adventure about a cult of singers in an out of the way village in the Black Forrest. But I fear it was only published in German. Nevertheless an isolated village with some rather inbred folks doing rather uncivilised things sounds good to me.

In the minds of those of us who've never been there, just the name is enough to conjour with!

"Rather gentle hills" is kind of disappointing, actually. I was hoping for something like the steep-sided hills of Transylvania, black with pine trees, with the improbably narrow valleys and castles perched on the narrowest bits!

(I have been to bits of Transylvania; spent about ten days in Sighasoara & Brasov back in 2000. Lovely country, and parts of it are genuinely spooky-looking!)

Werewolves, werewolves and did I mention werewolves?
Its probably a bit cliched and to be expected but given the woods, mountains etc that would be my choice. :)

You guys ever see that movie "Dog Soldiers"?  I think it may have been a BBC thing.  Anyhow I was just thinking of the Little Red Riding Hood idea and then "Dog Soldiers" poped into my head then I thought that those two stories might work together.  What if Little Red was a wearwolf too......
