  • I have a bad feeling about this...
I've started on a new Pulp project, some bad guys for LT McAlister and the Harbor Patrol to tangle with.
Here is my WIP of some Chinese pirates, and a modest junk, one that could either be pirates or just innocent sailors.

Here is the start of the hull which is as long as the piece of foamcore I had.

Hull covered in matte board and I'm starting to think it is too long.

Flat top added and she is now looking less like a monitor and more like an aircraft carrier with a small hold.

You might notice my partially painted pirates in the background. Yes I stopped painting them to build the ship. Doh!
Front sides added and its starting to take shape.

My tape tore the surface of the matte board, but it will be covered in paint and unlike the USS Barracuda, this junk is going to be well weathered and worn.

Back sides added and now it looks more like a rocket ship with 50's fins.

Windows started but not yet framed. Peek a boo!
I'm doing a single cabin that will be light on detail but hopefully still pleasing to game in.

Test paint job on left which I'm pretty happy with in spite of the lousy pic.
They will all have black pants to tie them together.
Does 'Black Pants' sound cool in Chinese? If so that's what I'll call them.

This fellow was to be the leader. In spite of having the super cool broomhandle Mauser on his hip, I gave him a Luger in his left hand because a pirate leader can never have too many weapons, the existing left hand was kind of meh and well Lugers are cool. BTW, Lugers shoot soo very smoothly. If you ever get the chance to shoot one do it. My wife even agrees it's a sexy pistol.

Then a package arrived today from friend in Merry Ole England with a surprise inside, a painted leader chappie.
Thank You James!

Here is the infamous Mandarin standing in front of the partially completed bulkhead contemplating what evil scheme to unleash next upon an unsuspecting world. Bwhahahahahahahahahahaa!

Oh, it was after seeing the Mandarin that I thought to myself that this junk isn't too small after all.
The Mandarin thinks big!

Work will come to a standstill while I take the family to the Great Smokey Mountains but should resume in about a week.

Thanks,
Amalric

Thank you all for your kind words.

Are you sure the one with the Luger is a guy?  lol
Well to be honest, when I ordered the pack [BC21 Chinese Bandit Chiefs] from Copplestone I thought the mini was of a female because of the chest. But when you look at the mini in the flesh you see its actually a flat stomach.

Also there is no long hair down the back, just a head band.
It would be easy enough to add some long hair, etc., to make it look more female, but I'll just leave it as is.

REALLY looking forward to seeing this one progress, simply so I can steal all of your ideas.  :-*

Steal away.
I am inspired by so many here on LAF.
The great thing about LAF is the excellent inspiration for whatever you want to work on.

Also, looking back I realized really how lame the pic of my pirate test was.
The test mini is in the middle with the 1st two production pirates in the pic below.

I'll use the black pants and red head bands to unify them.

Very nice. A great addition to any pulp game. I may have to build myself one of those.

Given the waist-to-hip ratio, that figure looks female to me, and despite the flattish chest, which is not all that uncommon. Also, I'm not sure why it seems to be such a common assumption that Chinese females should always have their hair down, no matter what the dynasty.

Wow. Looking very nice. Can't wait to see the finished project.
