Another needed vehicle

Here's a neat WWI A/C model built by an old acquaintance of mine.  It's in 1/35 scale but might inspire our 28mm designers.     It's built on an American Pierce-Arrow truck chassis and was armoured by the British.  The gun is a 3 pdr.  It was sent to join the Russians in 1915 under Commander Oliver Locker-Lampson, RN, and fought with them until the Revolution in 1917.  Too large and heavy for conditions in Russia, it was not used very often.  I imagine we could use it a lot, though!

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mark,

Thankyou for sharing your thoughts and photos. This vehicle is truly one that should see light of day on the gaming table.

I've Bryan Perrett & Anthony Lord's "The Czar's British Squadron" book and its a great read. One of many contributions to the Czars cause in Russia -Even an Australian was with this squadron  8)

Looks similar to the Garford, another armoured car with a big turret on the back.

A cool model indeed.

Apparently, they also used the chassis to make an armoured anti-aircraft vehicle.  Saw a picture somewhere but can't remember where! Must be symptoms of lead poisoning!

Pierce Arrows with an open top, armoured side arrangement and 2 pdr pom pom were built for the Royal Marines as AA vehicles, it's believed these were the chassis later convereted for the type modelled above.

There was also the very similar Seabrook, which was fitted with a 1 pdr pom pom, a sort of 40 mm Maxim Gun. The Seabrook was a chain drive vehicle and mechanically this caused some probs. The Pierce- Arrow chassis was greatly preferred. One of the Pierce Arrows was converted, having the original PA chassis with a Seabrook body and the PA's 3 pdr mounted on a pedestal in the rear. At least two photos exist of this particuar model plus another showing a discarded Pierce Arrow Turret in Russia presumably the same one. Only three were ever made and weighing in at 9 tons, were problematic in terms of usage in a country with poor roads.

Vickers- Wolseley also made a very similar vehicle for export to Russia using a chain drive Peerless chassis, these carried additional MGs.

Want my vote for armoured cars?

1) Garford-Putilov saw widespread service in the RCW

2) Jeffrey Quad, saw widespread service in Ireland, the ME and India.

3) Indian pattern Fiats

4) Any of the various Fiat/ Isotta double turreted Russian types.

For really bizarre, a Sizaire-Berwick, fitted with an aero engine and powered by apropeller at the rear  or the turreted Willy's that saw service in Quetta and was armed with a theree barrel Nordenfledt, scrounged from a museum.

Nice model BTW.

Excuse the threadomancy.

Carlos, do you have any pics of that vehicle?

Here's one under restoration.  Looks impressive.  There are some nice Model T's on one of the other pages.

No that's just the truck chassis not the armoured car. War Cars has a swathe of photos of the A/C. Alas I can't find a photo of the Briish version on the web. I have found illustrations of the US version, which is not dissilmilar in general outline, the major difference being it lacked the second turret.

Here's the American version:

Just found another neat vehicle that would make a great model.  Although it looks like a staff car, it's actually an artillery tractor.  It's a Ford-Marmon-Harrington Mle 1928.  It was apparently used by the cavalry to tow the 47mm AT gun.  There were 90 built and some were used by the Germans in WWII.  (I'm a little confused about the date, though, since when I saved the images, they said 1938.)
