Dark Heresy: RPG. Have you tried it as a tabletop game?
« on: June 03, 2013, 07:54:57 PM »
I just skimmed through the rules of Dark Heresy: RPG. It is a RPG in the grimdarkely universe where you are an agent for the inquisition. To cut a long story very much shorter. When I read the combat rules they clearly stated that they where written with 28mm and terrain in mind.

So have anyone out there actually tried using the rules as a tabletop game?

No, I've not, but I could figure it working well enough. Though Inquistor would work very well if you're after a tabletop RPG, or for more of a standard tabletop game try Inquisamunda (a mod for Necromunda).

I've played the game quite a few times and I'd say it works better with miniatures. Our GM used minis only a few times. When he didn't use the minis the game lost some of it's appeal. I mean, why wouldn't you play this with minis? Supposedly you're already interested in the 40K universe, so you probably have a few figs siting around. As to whether it would work as a stand alone wargame? It wouldn't be my first choice. The mechanics are there, but they aren't really built to play balanced games of side vs. side.

Just my opinion. Your mileage may very.

Thanks for the replies. Iīve played Inquisitor and sold of the minis a few years back, when I decided I couldnīt be bothered to build 54mm terrain. But I did like the game. I have tried inquisitmunda too and liked it. I where mostly just curious how Dark Heresy worked as a table top game. I guess you could treat it as a every gamer have one character made as a RPG character and the GM put up the enemies, and then make it a very objective driven game (as the old Inquisitor game).

But perhaps it work best as a complement to the RPG....

As of the ancient debate about GW.

I really like the WH40K setting when you read the books written by real authors, because they are able to put the humanity back into the world, making me belive in the setting and what drives the characters. The WH40K game, not so...

You can also play imquisitor with 28mm minis, so no need for 54mm or extra terrain.

I did it a few years ago. It worked well, better than inquisitor in my opinion.

Don't ask me how i did it. i think there was a fair amount of winging it, but it was a blast.

Creatures Anathema might have them.  I remember there being at least a couple Tyranid creatures in it.  I don't have my copy here to check for you, but I'm sure someone can confirm or deny for us.

Dark Heresy I think only has Genestealers and Lictors, who are Tyranid scouts as I recall. This is because the Calixis Sector (the setting of the game) is largely free of this particular menace, and they haven't been encountered there.

If you want to get into Tyranids, you need Deathwatch, the game where you play Space Marines. That game has different Tyranid types coming out of its ears, in the core book and across the various supplements. The setting of this game is the somewhat-stalled Achilus Crusade in the Jericho Reach, which has three main fronts, one of which is facing a Tyranid Hive Fleet (and not doing a very good job of stopping it). The two other fronts are against Chaos and the Tau (and there are supplements that include the awakening of the dread Necrons in the deepest, farthest parts of the Reach).

Edited for stupid spelling mistake.
