Tents in Wild West town

Hi All,

Have been watching Hell on Wheels, which both my wife and I are enjoying. Hope it continues!

My question is. How long after a town site was started would you continue to see tents used?

Would they be replaced or moved to the fringes of the town?

My thoughts are that once the owners became more financial they would be replaced by wooden structures and that the tents would wear quickly.

Tents would last until the town became established enough it passed a fire code banning them. Usually after a big fire. Of course then you had to allow tents on a temporary basis, and then there would be another fire because stoves, drunks, livestock, and tents are a bad combination and so on.
