Bailey's Mission to Tashkent
« on: May 02, 2008, 02:24:28 PM »
Hot today Colonel Bailey's (Hopkirk's First Class Man) book "Mission to Tashkent", a beautiful issue, with some very interesting photos.

'one of the best books about secret intelligence work ever written' Peter Hopkirk. Colonel F. M. Bailey, whose extraordinary adventures are told here, was long accused by Moscow of being a British master-spy sent in 1918 to overthrow the Bolsheviks in Central Asia. As a result, he enjoyed many years after his death an almost legendary reputation there - that of half-hero, half-villain. In this remarkable book he tells of the perilous game of cat-and-mouse, lasting sixteen months, which he played with the Bolshevik secret police, the dreaded Cheka. At one point, using a false identity, he actually joined the ranks of the latter, who unsuspectingly sent him to Bokhara to arrest himself. Told with almost breathtaking understatement, Bailey's narrative - set in a region once more back in the headlines - reads like vintage Buchan.

It's a fantastic read - real Boy's Own Adventure stuff.  Highly recommended - and some good fodder for gaming scenarios.

Just about to order it myself. I've recently been reading all the Hopkirk books. Just "The Great Game" to read and then I'll have a go at this one.

Every time I begin to invent some "insane" plot for a pulp/BoB game, I find that reality has been there before me, and is even stranger than what I was thinking up!

You should give 100 bonus points in the painting league for a unit of War Yaks Alex! :)

One of my favourite books next to 'Setting the East Ablaze'. Just brilliant - the story of it's publishing is good too.

Its an excellent book from a visual prespective 8)

I've had mine for sometime now, but sadly I've not got around into reading this adventure. To many other books to read, but one day.

Mine arrived yesterday. The photos and maps alone were well worth the $20 I paid!
