I got some Foundry SWAT from the Street Violence range, and they are massive. I was going to use them for modern zombie gaming, but the swat team looks like its made up of five Kareem Abdul Jabbars. I've heard that there are large and small figs in the Foundry Old West range; which sets are which? How can I tell which ones are the older, smaller ranges?

The Foundry Old West Collections Number 1 to 8 and 17 are large the others are all small.

It still comes down to the same thing.  Sure, we can excuse differences in the size of humans by normal variation.  However, the same does not apply to weapons.  An Artizan figure with a revolver in his hand will appear to be holding a derringer if put next to a similarly armed Black Scorpion figure.

Too true.  I could take several of my Foundry figs and cleanly put them inside the Black Scorpion ones...
