Fantasy skirmish game: Dying Star 'Oblivion' Kickstarter
« on: 22 June 2013, 02:27:03 PM »
Tech fantasy game rather than high fantasy, has land and water based races some with access to machinery. Based in the world of the Dying Star book trilogy by Samsun Lobe. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dying-Star-Samsun-Lobe/dp/144908186X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371906779&sr=8-1&keywords=Dying+Star ). A genuine game development Kickstarter rather than the more common cash pump pre-order.

Heroic 28mm scale, individual based skirmish game, 3-10 miniatures per starter force for a 2ft x 2ft table. Both figure count and table size can be increased for bigger forces but 50-60 figures is outlined as the maximum.

Early days yet but looks interesting, neat rule mechanics and has some very useful troop types and figure concepts for many games not just this one. Based in Europe (UK) so shipping is not the usual problem.

Skirmish game rules are in final playtest stage (KS pledgers are encouraged to join in development) there is quite a lot of concept art already and first 3d renders of some of the figures are just starting to appear.

"Dying Star" very apt name given the performance of this KS project.  Not quite free fall yet, but certainly struggling :'(

Losing backing ££ and backers daily now, still a long time to go but I do not see this one recovering which is a real shame.
The game concept is good, the model renders look great and the world setting (from the Samsun Lobe novels) is excellent. If you have not read them you should, I don't think Samsun is a gamer but he writes the background, armies and battles as if he was.

BUT....the whole Kickstarter unfortunately comes over as badly thought out and the team behind it go for days without answering questions, IMHO gives no sense of security that you will get what you pledge for. The rulebook stretch goal seems well out of reach and even the initial funding goal looks in serious doubt. Perhaps simultaneous development of 8 races/armies and the rules is too much for the part time team behind the project?
Maybe getting the rulebook and 2 or 3 forces done first would have been a better strategy.
