terrain hexes anyone?
« on: November 22, 2014, 04:22:16 AM »
I want to either buy or make some 2" terrain hexes for my Skygalleons of Mars game, but am not sure how to proceed. Any suggestions and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

Been the subject of conversation over on the Hirst arts forums in the new mold section for a while now.  He has made some but they were only to test the concept.  My suggestion would be to draft up a hexagon template on clear plastic.  Drill holes in the corners.  Use the template to mark out the hexagons onto wood or MDF with a sharpie and go to town with a saw but I have never been subtle.  There use to be companies that produced cheap laser cut hexagons in Styrofoam years ago but I have not seen any recently.  Here are links for what I found while thinking on it.

Here are some in pre-cut paper.

Here are some laser cut in wood with the price tag to boot.

Hope that helps.

GHQ also has a styrofoam terrain hex system.

You are looking for bulk supplies of hexagon cake blanks. Since you did not list your location, I assume you are in Australia. Here is a supplier that sells 2 inch (50mm) hexes in Perth.

I've used the GHQ tiles and bought a set of the cake ones as well.

Both sets are in the bin as neither lined up very well and it drove me potty trying to get rid of the gaps.

In the end I went for MDF hexes cut by laser and stuck ceiling tiles to them and cut with a hot wire using the MDF as the template.

I'm thinking about using that thick material you get at Michaels and the like, that a lot of people use to make roads and rivers. It's sort of a rubbery thick felt.

And it rose from the dead.  Sorry for bringing up a dead subject but this is pertinent.

Just added to his web store in 1.5 inch, 1.75 inch and 2 inch.  Pricy but it is a one time expense.
