Giant War-Snail with Bolt Thrower
« on: June 24, 2013, 04:53:29 PM »
Had a pretty stressful day around the house and needed to do something to take my mind off stuff, so I built a giant war-snail.

The snail itself was £1 in Asda, and everything else was stuff I found round the house and gear from my bits box. All told it took about two hours' work.

I realised early on just how ramshackle it was going to look- by this point I hadn't decided on who would own it but the (accidentally) very low walls of the howdah sealed the deal, and it's going to be a gift to my goblins, who could do with a bit of a height advantage! Despite having a GW skeleton on the bench the entire time I didn't think to use it to size the walls up and they're woefully short for anyone but goblin-sized riders.

The goblin I've used for scale is going to be its commander, he was the first gobbo I put my hand on and he's posed perfectly for the role, as if he's screaming the order to fire. One more for the painting list, then.

The bolt thrower is mounted on a washer to allow it to rotate or be removed from the howdah.

I haven't primed and painted it yet, as I was going to ask the collective authorities of Lead Adventure if spray primer is likely to ruin all my work by making the cocktail sticks and matchsticks warp?

Different  :)

Spray won't warp anything there unless you flood it.

From a Goblin's perspective, that is THE perfect way to charge into combat...by the time you get there everyone else has found something else to do. That said, it's a creative/imaginative creature that takes advantage of materials on hand. It should be WONDROUS to behold once painted. Have FUN with the Beasty!

Thanks for the comments guys! Good call, DeafNAla, I didn't even think about how well it would suit good old fashioned goblin cowardice!

Dr. The Viking, I've responded to your PM (I think) but I'm not sure if it went through!

Brilliant! Consider the idea stolen! (Was it a recent purchase? I tried looking on the Asda webstore, but couldn't find it)

Picked it up last week or the week before. It was in their "everything's £1" section, so possibly a territorial SKU or just not on their online shop for cost/benefit reasons.

 :o Jungle Slug!!!  lol

Oh my; that's simply brilliant. No really; it's gobboer than gobbos and I love it.

I think you're safe with spraypainting the skewers too btw.

If I might offer one suggestion though; why not add some rope bindings around the places where the poles connect? I've used unwound strands of copper electrical wire to great effect for that purpose.

Keep it up; let's see that Escargot de Guerre painted and crewed!  :D

So what you are saying is that when under extreme duress or your blood pressure is up, your creativity comes to the foreground?

I'd hate for you to go through that often. It's not good for you

But here's hoping you have a pissy day again soon!  lol  I wonder what else you will come up with?

Daeothar! Thanks for the kind words man! Great idea on the binding, I'll grab some picture wire tomorrow!

BigB, it's a pretty new thing for me, normally when I'm stressed out I just don't do anything! I hope this isn't a one off!

With a title like that you can't help but look!

That's a pound and an afternoon well spent!

I wonder what the trample damage is?
