A 1:48 scale T29E3/M29 for a what if scenario.
« on: September 22, 2017, 07:02:34 PM »
After 4 years of playing World of Tanks on the Xbox, the T29 is still one of my favorite 'fun to play' tanks. It's just beastly looking.
Anyhow, I bought this a while back after seeing it on Shapeways. At 1:48 scale, it is big, incredibly detailed for a printed model and expensive. And to my surprise, the entire vehicle was printed in one piece. Not with a separate turret as shown in the preliminary drawings. Oh well, it can still get onto the game table. It just won't look as awesome as it should with it sitting there like a statue.
After sitting it on the shelf for 6 months, I decided to get it painted up in time for an upcoming post war, 'what if' scenario we will be running. She will be joining some M46 and an M47 Patton to take on my sons  IS-2 and IS-3 heavy forces and kick the Soviets out of Germany.
Other than the two stowage box/bundles, the M2 machine gun, water can and antennas, all of the detail was part of the finished print. The rough texture is kind of annoying, but real tank turrets of that era were all cast and fairly rough looking up close so I've learned to deal with it.

Here she is, ready to kick some Tiger II's or IS-3's in the behind:

Great looking tank.
What size of gun did it carry?

The T29 prototypes were armed with a 105MM gun. The E3 was the 'final' version with the big, navy style rangefinder hoods.
The T30 variant had a 155mm gun and the T34 variant was armed with a 120mm gun. The T34 was morphed into the T43 which eventually became the M103 in active service.

Never knew anything about this tank. Nice looking model.
I am going to build a wargames army, a big beautiful wargames army, and Mexico is going to pay for it.

Looked up a few facts about the T29.

Weight around 64 tons.
Had thicker armor than a Tiger II.
What a beast.
