Hi, I recently stumbled over a beaten up and unfinished Revell ‘Spanish Galleon’ with a lot of spare parts. Box says 1/96 - like other ships of that range. But that’s wrong. It is far bigger – rather 1/70. Even 25mm minis seem to match. For comparison I added some Old Glory ghostly pirates (since I have no English sea dogs or Spaniards yet):
The ‘Spanish Galleon’ is no true scale model. In fact, it was intended to serve as a room decoration in the 1970ies. The masts are by far too high.
But the hull is not bad at all to represent an Elizabethan/Tudor ship. Without the upper sails the rigging might look more convincing. Here’s a manufacturer’s pic of a completed model:
Revell also did an ‘English Man O’War’ which featured a slightly different head knee, rear upper structure and an additional mizzen-mast. That one is harder to find today while the ‘Spanish Galleon’ still is available.
Since there is no big choice in affordable 1500’s ships, I’ll give it a try and rebuilt it.
