"Random" actions for Bugs rules
« on: July 05, 2013, 10:42:48 PM »
I am thinking there should be some randomness in the actions of the less intelligent bugs in a hive culture.  Workers should flee combat unless the queen is threatened, Melee soldiers should charge/engage, Thinking/missile warriors should engage from optimum ranges, yada-yada-yada but there should be some variation if they think or are controlled by thinking bugs.

I need a mechanism/set of rules to allow me that variation, (short of writing my own tool, which I can do,) and wondered if such a creation exists.  Any suggestions, guys and gals?

Gracias,

Glenn

Simpliest is reaction tables, where you roll for an event based on the proximity of enemy, etc.

TUSK has this in its mechanism. You look at what situation the miniature (ie bug) is in, moving left to right until you see a matching situation column (you can have as many as you want), then roll a die (ie D6). Let's imagine a bug is in close combat:

Score  Fire < 7cm   Close Combat
1              W                 A
2              W                 A
3               F                 A
4               F                 W
5              PF                  F
6              PF                PF

W - Withdraw
F - Flight
PF - Panic Flight
A - Attack

You wouldn't roll in the first column (unless there's also a fire burning within 7 cm), so you roll a D6 while it's in combat. You get a 3. Consulting the table the bug will attack. Does that make sense?

Understood.

I was just trying to see if there were better/commercial models to use (which I doubted) instead having to make my own.  I would use D10 instead (D6 are not my favorites for random chance stuff.)

Gracias,

Glenn
