Thank you Michael,

good idea to push the Barbarian project further. Itīs fantastic what Iīve seen here of your work.
Some day I will get back to them again, maybe for HotT.

First have to travel through the dense jungle of central africa before I will march through the lands of Hyboria again :D

Cheers

Tetela warriors are top notch  :-* It's getting one of my current favorit threads, keep it coming, Alex!

Though hope you don't mind some small criticism, I think you need a better flat varnish, some of them are looking a bit glossy.

Thanks for this Alex. That's really great that this is getting one of your current favorit threads. Will do my best to keep it up to date with new painted miniatures.

I'm always very open for feedback.
I've thought about that glossy thing myself. The Force Publique miniatures look more glossy than in reality to be honest. Though they are not that matt I like them to be.
The problem is that they were already varnished when I painted them again, so I have to live with that I think. The Tetela are still WIP, so they won't look glossy (hopefully) after getting their matt varnish anymore.

Normally I use Marabu gloss varnish done with a brush. The second step (after waiting for at least 24 hours) is then to spray Army Painter matt varnish. For the complete new painted miniatures this works, but it had not really worked with the already painted Force Publique.

Any advice on how I can get better results with a real matt varnish is much appreciated.

Cheers

I'm using Army painter as well but it doesn't look that glossy.

But there are enough of alternative solutions. Check this one article by Orctrader, is very helpful:

Lovely paintjobs! :-* I really have to get back to my 200 plus minis someday :-/

I use the same one as Alex. It's so far my favourite after years of playing lottery with other brands :)

Thanks for the useful link Alex.

Mmmhh, maybe it is the Marabu gloss varnish?
Or do I use too much of the Army Painter spray in one go?

Have to check this again.

I guess you need some more layers of matt varnish to cover the gloss layer. I'm using the spray version of Army Painter and spraying my figures at least three times. One layer would be never enough.

I've only just found this thread, but am really impressed with your figures.  Wow!  Nice basing as well, very atmospheric paint jobs.  Good work all round.

I don't know if you're in the UK, but we are having a Death in the Dark Continent day in Nottingham on the 19th November:

There are still a few places available.

On the varnish issue, the flattest finish I've found so far is Testor's Dullcote; however, I found the Army Painter Matt Varnish was actually better on my Azande tribesmen, as it wasn't completely matt.  I though this looked better on the skin.

Cheers

Oh, great stuff, Alex! Really well done! And trust me when I tell you, you are not alone with the Africa bug. We're always here for you. :)  :D

@Varnish
I can second Alex' suggestion. DR soluble matt varnish is as good as it gets!

@location
You seem to be in Germany, correct? If you are close to the Frankfurt/Darmstadt/Mannheim area, feel free to contact me. We'd love to visit Africa with new explorers.

Hi James,

thanks a lot for this. I've already seen the info about the africa day on the northstar news.
Would be great to join you guys in Notts though this is sadly to expensive for me to travel from Germany to Birmingham airport, take a taxi to Nottingham, book a hotel etc.
Maybe next time. I'm looking forward to see some nice pictures of that day.

I've also seen your Azande, very inspiring work and a beautifull paint job. One day we might have a great game and some pints together  :)

And I absolutely agree that it sometimes look better to have not a very matt finish for african miniatures, though still trying to achieve better results with my finish.

Cheers

Thank you very much Remington :)

Your Gumba site is brilliant as well as your blog!

I'm from the Niederrhein, close to the Ruhrpott. Let's check via PM if we can arrange something.

Hello Gentlemen,

tonight I finished the painting of 5 more Manyema/Ruga miniatures.
One more to go and then doing the bases. Hopefully I can post these two finished bases in the next days.

Cheers
