28mm Traction Engines for hauling Heavy Artillery ?
« on: July 14, 2013, 01:49:25 PM »
I've just ordered HLBS's lovely looking British 8" Howitzer and was thinking I might do some kind of vignette (as its placement on a gaming table would be impractical as its normal for 'off table' artillery support) involving some kind of hauler.
I know that the 8" Howitzers were traditionally pulled by a Holts Caterpillar Tractor but its such an obscure vehicle I doubt there is a model of that at all !
Which leaves me with Traction Engines as an alternative. The nearest I can find for scale are Corgi Traction Engines at 1/50 but they are obviously collectors items fetching silly money (I'll be repainting it any way so would destroy its collectable value) .
Can anyone point me in the direction of cheaper models between 1/56-1/43 that I can use please ?

Cheers

IIRC Lledo made a few diecast traction engines, have a look on ebay.

Cheers Carlos, from what I can gather the Lledo Engines are 1/76 or size/scaled to fit the box which are going to be waaaay too small and I've come across a Matchbox Collectables version at 1/43 scale which on reflection I think is going to be too big !
Not having much luck so far am I ?

do You have a link for these?
just out of curiosity

otherwise, have You thought of converting cheap construction vehicle toys? it is my impression that the difference might not be too big

former user - heres the link http://www.anticsonline.co.uk/714_1_1545030.html haven't come across any construction toys/kits as yet but am still trawling the net.

dampfpanzerwagon - yea I saw that one, a little bit out of my budget and I think the Engine is from Scalelink, retails at about £45. Still looking for something a wee bit cheaper :)

Could you 'reverse engineer' one from Company B's Sutton Skunk?

If you ask Brent nicely, maybe he'll consider making one!

Ironclad have a resin & metal kit of an armoured steam tractor. Might you not work from that?

former user - I did say Catapillar Tractor but said it was such an obscure vehicle that it's probably not produced.

Will Baille - Re-engineering is a possiblity but will take a fair bit of work.

Yankeepedlar01 - The Ironclad Armoured Steam Tractor is a possibillity but again would need a bit of work, I want to be able to see all the innard working bits (I'm being fussy and awkward I know !)

I used the Matchbox model of yesteryear Fowler engine look for traction engine on eBay.  Somewhere there is some photos of mine under VBCW.  They work well together.  They even do a WD one in British army grey

Found a picture.  http://gwargamesp.fr.yuku.com/topic/6464
Searched on Google VBCW traction engine.

Thanks for the link and info Tym (and the info on my other post about HLBS's 8" Howitzer).
Now I know what I'm after I'll keep an eye on ebay.

Cheers
