Iron Sky
« on: May 08, 2008, 02:54:44 AM »
Hey guys,

Just stumbled across this.  Not my cup of tea, but I figured it would be quite interesting to some.

The basic premise looks to be that the Nazi's launched from Antarctica in 1945 and colonized the dark side of the moon.  In 2018 they are about to return.

Please be warned that the link does contain images with swastikas.

I do like the animation style and hope that the film includes some good battle scenes.

I thought the teaser was very impressive, especially the song they had going over it. But then there were two bits that made me question the film maker's judgement. The WWII style motorcycle in what they captioned as 2018 when everything else on the moon base showed large technical leaps.

And then there was the bit with the bird, the second I saw it land I knew what was going to happen. I imagine the production team thought it was an easy (read: cheap, real cheap) laugh, but it just made me rethink what the damn movie was supposed to be like. Is it going to be "serious," or another All-American heros take an initial setback but beat what proves in the end to be totally inept foreigners type crapfest?

Personally I'd like to see it end darkly, just for the hell of it. Bad guys need to win once in awhile to make them a credible threat. And if anyone could do that, it'd be Nazi's in advanced spacecraft.

Jibbery style oinkery which don't make no damn sense.

I was more concerned about there being a bird on the moon... lol

But it does look great, shame it'll mostly be set in 2018 and not WW2.

Quote from their website:
"Iron Sky is a pitch-black science fiction comedy that holds nothing sacred. It combines the dry irony of Dr. Strangelove with the visual style of invasion films such as Independence Day. Finns are known for their dark wit, perhaps due to their history successively under the oppressive thumb of Sweden, Russia, and the Nazis. Star Wreck repeatedly skewered Russia (and was wildly successful there), and Iron Sky continues in the same vein of mocking totalitarianism."
So expect something funny! :)

I knew it had to be a comedy when I saw a BMW w/side car driving on the moon. ;D

I'd rather it have been serious. Too much of modern pulp seems to be constantly winking at the reader saying; "Look at how silly this is! Wakka Wakka!" You see the same thing on the net with insta-cool/comedy things like monkeys, ninjas, pirates, zombies, and Nazi brains in jars. All so horribly overused that they've lost all mystique or impact. It's one of the reasons I stopped watching tv and can't stand most of the internet. It's all horribly divorced from creativity and just another fill in the blank script, and the creators think they're being clever...

If this is going to be a "black comedy" (Re-Animator was billed as one too, but it was a straight up 'horror' movie.) I imagine it's going to wind up as just another example of the throw away Sci-Fi channel style crap that science fiction movies have turned into.

I get more and more turned off by this as it tries to land it's humor.  Looks cool but iI predict SS Doomtrooper quality and even humor.

Shame but I could be wrong,
Brian
