Not the most efficient method was used by me for my buildings (getting the architecture right) - I spent time on Google images and YouTube. This method will also help me with the painting.

The Ambush Alley forum is also pretty good for tutorials, etc.

Can't help you on the palm trees - I've only taken my Pegasus Hobbies ones off the sprue (will be used for Somalia settings).

Palm trees are easy: Architects Supply Companies.
I bought about 500 of them for not that much money, various scales and sizes... Look for a couple of ebay sellers in China.
They sell palm trees in bulk bags, and most of them of very good, and a fraction of the cost of "gaming" ones... they tend me be moulded in two or three colour plastics, depedning on the style of the tree, so they dont really need that much, if anything doing to them...

Just base and plant...

BTW, the very same companies also sell 1:48 ish civilians in arab costume, both male AND female, pre painted or bare plastic, so i also had 200 civilians to populate my Afghan/Iraq board...

Money can't buy you happiness but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery.

Afghanistan IS mostly desert.  It's just that the deserts are also mountains.  I don't remember seeing too many palm trees when I was there, mostly just brown, dusty hills and mountains.  The only places you ever saw green was where someone had planted a crop or maintained trees.  Afghans love their trees, and will go out of their way to tend them.

Populated areas will have lots of walled compounds (walls 2 to 3 m in height) with gardens as well as houses inside.  Construction is almost universally brick, plastered with mud so everywhere has a dusty yellow look.

Here are a few photo albums with some snaps of my time there:

I can provide a bit more info if you need, just let me know.

I've painted a few for my "Jihadistan" games which were cheapies from China via Ebay, but I did get bord with them so I bought a good few quids worth of palms from Ebob which just need basing.
