Guitarheroandy's 80's High Elves W.I.P. Updated 11th Dec
« on: July 22, 2013, 10:39:35 PM »
Well, after months of EBAYing and generally not painting, I finally pulled my finger out (as it were) and painted the first two 80's Elves from the pile I have recently amassed...

Here is the General and a Wardancer...

I have discovered that I am now incapable of painting eyes (my own are pretty well shot for that level of detail) and I decided straightaway to not bother being too traditionally 80's in my basing style either! However, all things considered, I like these guys! They have painted up really well. Am in the middle of painting a test swordsman and then it's onto a unit of 10 knights, all mounted on mail-barded horses to be the General's bodyguard... Mighty hard they look too (we'll soon fix that with a few flowers on the bases though!!   )

Enjoy!

Great paint jobs! I love the old elves.  The bases are aces. How did you do the flowers?

Thank you! The flowers are dead easy to do. I just use clump foliage, which I (very carefully ) superglue to the base (this makes the foliage go harder than if I use PVA) Once it's dry I just dot paint on for the flowers. The pink ones are done with Foundry Winestain red (shade and highlight) and the white ones with Foundry Arctic Grey shade highlighted white. Very simple and very effective.

These are great, Andy.
You done an excellent bit of brush-wielding with these.
 :-*

An added bonus is that they are two of my favourite figures from that era.
Some of the best Elves were made at that time.

Not sure about the West Ham colours, though.... :'(

Stunning work. I love the colour combinations, unlike Blue, he's one of my favourite wardancers - its a treat to see him painted so nicely!

Those elves bring back many a happy last stand against numerous plastic skeletons.  :D

Great days.

Lovely paintwork too, looking forward to seeing more.
Ray.

Well, after almost 6 months of doing other stuff, I have come back to my Elves, chiefly because a friend and I have just found on EBAY all the rules and army books for WFB 5th edition!! So, my 'Oldhammer' Elves are back on! (Ok, 5th edition is probably 'quite old-ish hammer' rather than strictly 'Oldhammer', but who cares?)

I have refreshed the painting and basing on some of my 1990s Elves and have started to create regiments. Most of the models here are 4th-6th edition, although a handful of the archers are 80s Melniboneans or early Marauder/Citadel High/Wood Elves.

On the painting table are 10 80s Elf knights, all on mail-barded horses, along with a 90s Bolt Thrower that needs a tidy-up and a rebase.

Here are the spearmen, accompanied by a mage...new banner (handpainted), new shield designs and refreshed painting on spears and armour, plus new basing

Here are the archers - a right old mix of models!! new basing and a new banner (hand painted)

Here are the White Lions accompanied by a hero/General type figure. Just new basing on these.

And the Swordmasters...new basing on these too

Here's the whole force thus far, including an eagle and the 80s General/King model from the first post...

In the painting queue after the Knights and bolt thrower are a 90s chariot (awaiting two 80s steeds), 10 80s Silver Helms (unbarded horses), 16 80s archers (Melniboneans plus the Wood Elf chaps in studded leather armour); 18 80s spearmen, 12 Shadow Warriors (actually 80s Wood Elf archers in various hoods, leather armour, etc) two mages (80s vintage), the 80s Elf Chariot and another eagle.

While this is clearly a long-term project, at least the prospect of some games has inspired me to get some kind of move on and paint some stuff!!

Very nice!
I once got 30 Maiden Guard for $20. It was the deal of a lifetime! You should hunt for some!

Sadly, the only picture of my entire High Elf army is these converted Sea Guard:

Oooh...shiny!! Superbly painted models. I never liked those particular Elf plastics, but your painting really makes such a difference!! The shields are particularly striking!

Well done.

It's a pity you don't have other pics, as I bet the rest of the army is stunning.

Maiden guard (the old models) are currently selling for silly money on EBAY...wish I hadn't sold my original ones years ago... ::)

That's the army I dreamed of in 1991...

And I really like those flowers. Elves are just so... organic...  lol
