Japanese
« on: May 10, 2008, 04:21:24 AM »
Hi all,

Could anyone point me in a good direction for Japanese figures in 28mm which would be suitable for the victorian era?

Cheers folks

Have a look for Boxer Rebellion Japanese too, they will be ok. I've got some from Redoubt and Parroom. I know Old Glory have a range but not sure about any other manufacturers.
Don't!

For inspiration look to Young Bullshot's Japanese stuff, rather nice and I feel that Kamikazee should be a bit of a theme!

As far as I know there are five manufacturers currently producing (or in one case about to produce) 25/28mm Japanese suitable for VSF.

Old Glory produce packs of infantry, cavalry and artillery crew in their Boxer Rebellion range

Redoubt produce infantry in their Boxer Rebellion range. Very nice figures - slightly larger than the ioher manufacuturers listed here.

Parroom Station (sold through London Warroom) produce standard Japanese infantry, cavalry, artillery crew, MG team and characters compatible with the above ranges. They also produce 'Smoke Stalker' in gas hoods - I use these as 'mecha infantry', to be transported into action in steam vehicles or flyers. The figures are all 'slim 28mm'. These are from my collection:

Stronghold Miniatures are about to launch a range of Japanese for the Russo-Japanese War. These could also be used as Boxer Rebellion troops wearing white summer cap covers:

Finally, Pulp Figures make Japanese sailors. The ones in soft hats are perfect for Boxer Rebellion onwards:

Falcon did some Japanese in the Boxer Rebellion line.  Also Falcon did some Japanese and Russians for the Japan-Russo war. Do not know if they are still in production.

For some VSF Japanese, I've always figured that these two figures would do very fine as walkers/contraptions/mobilesuits:

The Dragonblade

The Typhoon

Both are available through Urbanmammoth from their Triads line. There might also be more figures suitable in that range, like the Kabuki doll and a very odd multi-rocketlauncher model called the Dragon Launcher. Just thought I'd share :)

For VSF Japanese powered suits I use Warmachine Khador Man-o-War figures:

The figures are simple converted by adding samurai-style horns to the helmets and replacing the polearm and shiels with 2-handes samurai swords (from TAG).

This is one of the things that makes me love VSF so much. Great new ideas just keep coming.

I'm now imagining steam-powered walkers wearing kilts and Tam O'Shanters  lol

As Malamute said - photos please!

I have been thinking of using BOB Chinese figures for as yet un-named fictional villains. These Japanese figures are very interesting, though and I may have to use them instead. They have better uniforms than the Chinese, so give more scope for snazzy uniform designs  :D

Cheers,
Ian
