40k skirmish gaming (No Limits)
« on: 15 August 2013, 02:26:56 AM »
Hey guys
What rules do u guys use for 40k skirmish gaming (5-20 figs, maybe a robot if we get crazy). I am looking for a set  that I can mess around with.
I was thinking of using AE Bounty, but just does not seem to hit the spot. Then I thought about using Vor so I can create all my own stuff and just forgo the squad thing and just create singles. I have heard that No Limits is the same set of rules?? Does any one know anything these rules (and why the website has not been updated in 5 years)?

Just got done last week playing my first game of Rogue Trader 40k (in like almost 20 years). It felt good.
thanks

In the Emperor's Name is a skirmish level game for 40K. I DL'd it a bit ago and intended on playing it but was sidetracked. Looked solid last review and it seems 3rd edition was out in May 2013. Again, haven't played it yet but you can DL for free.

Hope it works for you.

I have to second Yetis Yell suggestion of In the Emperor's name. Like him I downloaded them but haven't played them (yet).  They do seem nice.
Plus they have the extra endorsement of being the predecessor of Osprey's In her Majesty's name, a ruleset that seems to be very well received here on the LAF.
I'm currently reading through In her Majesty's name (IHMN), and I like what I see so far. Plus they have a points costing system for both figures and weapons, so you may even be able to retro-engineer IHMN to run 40K. I'm considering trying that, using ItEN as a guide, because, well, IHMN is simply the more developed ruleset of the two.

I second trying to re-jig IHMN for it. I just got the rulebook yesterday and I think it would work out in almost any setting with a bit of jiggery/pokery. I'm gonna give it a go and see how it pans out.

Rogue Trader is pretty good for small scale skirmishes too. A bit overly-complex but hellishly fun.

There's also Forge of War by the same author as ITEN & FUBAR:

No Limits is a rather good system and indeed has its basis in VOR! The addition of using a D10 instead of the more usual D6 makes for units that actually feel different and fit the background more than the old GW malarkey.

In the Emperors Name is also good as it deals with small skirmishes very well. Again each force has a suitably different feel to them. The only downside is its rather light on the vehicle front with stuff like APCs being about the heaviest vehicle used.

All the best!

It was not on Frothers, but here on the thread mocking the new space miners. The part about the new game starts here:

Because over the years, the wheel has become a bloated skull encrusted, over priced and ridiculously complicated object of derision.....

No Limits is definitely based on Vor, as was mentioned.  i believe the author stopped updating it when Vor 2.0 was in the works.  Not sure what has happened since then.  Good game as is though.

In the Emperor's Name is a good rule set.  It is currently going through a changeover to 3rd (I think) edition.  It is playable though, so don't let that put you off.

I also think that some version of Crooked Dice's Action Engine would make for great 40K skirmish action.

Lastly, Blasters and Bulkheads would work.  It is written for Star Wars-type games but I think it would work fine for 40K skirmish too.

Any of those would be my suggestions.

I'll cast yet another vote for In The Emperor's Name. It's fast, has a great campaign system, can be played solo and has a lot of flavour in the various warbands.

I really like it, it reinvigorated me after 40K left me jaded and I also bought IHMN on the strength of the game
