The Lost Colony
« on: August 18, 2013, 05:13:09 PM »
Hi all,

in June 2012, I started a short-lived attempt to whittle down my lead mountain and decided to paint a handful of ECW types. A couple of years ago, I had foolishly accepted goods-in-trade for painting a couple of FoW companies and found myself saddled with several kilos of ECW figures. My interest in ECW waned rather quickly, so they sat in storage for years.

Then, I got the idea to revisit a perennial favourite of mine, namely Sid Meier's "Colonization" game of 1994 vintage (and the more recent incarnation, for which my computer is too much of a wuss to enjoy fully). So, I decided to dig out old figures, including some Old Glory Woodland Indians from my FIW stint in 2003-05, and do a couple of skirmish forces, possibly to be used with the Peersian Eldorado rules published by WI and Foundry back in the day in a fictionalised "New World" setting that would allow incorporating Pirates as well as some "Last of the Mohican" shenanigans.

The first faction was intended as a Anglo-oriented private colony venture, operating under charter from His Majesty, King Charles I. Visually, I tried to capture the rag-tag flair of the movie "The New World" and put an "individual focus" on the figures as compared to unit painting.

A batch of various characters, with the sponsoring nobleman in red, some trusted lieutenants and a preachy cleric to get us into trouble with the natives.

Some spearmen:

Arquebusiers/musketeers:

And a cannon to defend the ramshackle stockades:

Unfortunately, the project stalled after that, due to a combination of real life constraints and my flypaper mind getting stuck on other settings. I hope to paint a force of Indians, at least, and maybe some compact colony buildings similar in style to my FIW project.

Thanks for looking!

That's a good idea - I have a similar problem, and I like this solution.
Nice painting too - especially the sponsor and spears.

what figures are you using?
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it anymore and what is it seems weird and scary.

As said above, the Indians will be predominantly Old Glory Woodland Indians, with some Mayincaztec odds and ends thrown in - I got a couple in a mystery bag from North Star some years ago, and may expand on those to depict various tribes, as befits the "all in close proximity" approach of Colonization.

The European figures are a mix from Dixon, Renegade and Bicorne. The latter are quite superb, although the separate heads require some careful positioning to look "right".

Unfortunately, I don't know. It was a single casting with an integral base, so you might want to check with the above named companies. I'd suspect it to be Bicorne, or Redoubt, judging from the size and sculpting style.

As said, I got the figures as payment-in-goods, with many already painted to various extents, some in big bags, others in ziplocs without any ID, others with company stickers on.

Very nice work Chris 8)

It might finally get me to do something with the few ECW figures I still have...

Interesting Project. Maybe I should look in my ECW-Box and take a part for a "New World"-Project
