Ink spill help: Thanks!!!!!
« on: September 10, 2013, 12:19:08 AM »
All righty...   My wife and I have a room where she keeps her sewing stuff and I keep my painting and modeling stuff.   Since she is away at a school right now I have kind of made use of her sewing table as a painting table.

Well, imagine my surprise when today I noticed a very old jar of red GW ink was on its side instead of upright, and that when I went to grab it and right it, it was stuck to the table.  It was stuck because it had leaked and was sitting in a dried puddle of ink.

So kind folks, any suggestions on how to clean that up?    The table has some laminate surface, not just plain wood.   I think trying to scrape it would scratch it all to heck.   Leaving it as is really is not an option.

Help me Lead Adventurers, you're my only hope!

Ooooh, you got yourself a sticky problem there...

This link HERE may offer your best bets.

If the laminate is non-porous, then you should have little trouble softening the film of acrylic polymer that has formed and peeling or gently scraping it from the table-top. Use soft plastic, like a credit card as a scraper to avoid causing scratches.

If the red pigment has stained the laminate, you may be in for a hard time. Dilute bleach NOT TO BE MIXED WITH ANY OF THE AMMONIA SOLUTIONS FROM ABOVE may help as red pigments are notorious for being easy to bleach.

Good luck.

I've used Dettol and nail polish remover (the cheapo stuff with acetone) for cleaning my desk, but that is made out of something like melamine laminated mdf.

I'd try a bunch of flowers and/or a box of chocolates. Good luck.

Order exact replacement for said sewing table.
Swap sewing tables.
Throw out old sewing table.
Start earning brownie points now while she is away.
Lots of praying. :-)

Thanks for the ideas and help, folks!

Mr. Peabody's link had me try rubbing alcohol which worked absolutely perfectly.   I used it, and some paper towels and a thumb nail on the really thick parts (which actually would have come off eventually if I let them soak long enough).

Table surface is thankfully nonporous and has no staining.

 :D

Now, if I can just figure out

1.  Why and when I ever bought GW ink?

2.  Why they made such crappy bottles that are a right bitch to open but obviously leak?

3.  How the heck, on a table full of 'stuff' with multiple paint and ink bottles, glues, figures and hunks of terrain in various stages of completion, magnifying light, brushes, tools and basing materials, the ONE thing that happened to fall/get knocked over was the one GW ink I seem to have?

Again guys, thank you.  I very seriously appreciate the helpful suggestions and the humorous ones as well.

GW ink bottles used to leak in their shippingboxes, and almost always packed with army books and rule books. The local store used to have to ask for replacements of every other shipment it seemed.

you are a lucky man, CptJake!

My crappy GW ink bottles leaked on a wood butcher block counter top.  And they were in a box.  7 yrs later and my wife is STILL cashing that one in.
