Jim, I actually prefer the smaller size of the T&T games. I like small. Small is good. Small lets you do more and different units, rather than buying your Nth squad of regular vanilla riflemen for an existing force to make it rules-ready, when by that point my attention has wandered and I really want to paint something else.

that's the main reason why I won't be playing this rules! if they've made a system like "legends of the.." for the old trench fight with shovels and grenades, then they would have a player!

No, it wouldn't suitable for raids and patrols imo. You could do it, but I think it would lack the detail you'd expect from a small level game. I've not played any of the 'legends' games, so I couldn't comment on their suitability.

The "Legends" system is based around a strong central character, a number of tougher second-rank special characters, grunts, and the odd specialist character. Groups are never much more than about 20 figures per side. It's got some clever rallying and charging mechanics where your leader can call "To Me!" and carry the day. Very cinematic. A nice blend reminiscent of the better parts of Mordheim Warband building and some of the clever skirmish stuff GW has done. It would probably suit trench raiding well, but at that point I'd probably switch over to .45 Adventures.

Moustache of the Poilu: This model sprouts a thick, hairy mustache and beard. Once per game, the model may make a Laconic Quip, which causes all models within 6" to develop a cynical attitude. These models do nothing else for the rest of the turn.

Jim, I'm lucky in that all my gaming gang play for the fun of it. The one tedious "Victory at all costs!" chap in our group dropped out years ago.

My lot are rules-lawyery, but purely out of the love of a good argument, and the enjoyment of friendly banter. It is a strange thing, but our games are often interrupted by long debates about the rules, purely done for the fun of it. They never get heated, because we are usually debating as amateurs (amateurs in the original sense of the word: That's to say, in the Corinthian spirit, for the love of it, never for personal advantage).

In fact my pal Chronoglide can usually be found vehemently arguing a position that, if conceded by the rest of us, will actually make things worse for his side.

We're a funny lot like that.

Is it safe to assume that these rules operate on the "you go, I go" method of who goes when in a turn?

I like some of the things in the rules, wonder if I could shoehorn the TW&T card activation systems into these rules.

Jim, I see you want to use the rules for the SCW, is there scope for stuff like the Militias, and their rather strange command systems!!!?

Pipes of Peace
Once played this magical instrument causes all troops within 2ft to down weapons, pick up a football, and play an inpromptu game of Footie in no-mans land. You must however field the special 'McCartney" character to use them.

My last gaming group where like that largely... the odd pain in the a***, but hey.

I'd like to point out that GW does not use 'wargear' before anyone asks... maybe they should have?

Absinthe The unit is afflicted with a malaise after drinking this, they immediately halt to ponder 'the point of it all' and 'man's inhumanity to man'.

The Football Some wag throws a football in front of the advancing British line, causing them to advance at full speed towards the enemy while passing the ball across the line. Units may not take cover. If adjoining battalions are the Manchester  Regiment and Liverpool Pals, a heated arguement halts the advance in the centre of no-man's land.

War Poet. Causes confusion and animosity in all Herefordshire school boys within 12", 66 years after the turn in which they are deployed.

I remember that video...  :'(

Yep UGOIGO it is.
The command system is flexible in that you have your command group and attach 'platoons' to it, or 'companies' in the case of the Battalion HQ, in line with normal organisation.

Obviously you'd have to creative with both your army lists for the SCW, rules to reflect the militia's lack of formal command structure and questioning of orders, at least in the first year or so. So 'special rules' would be the order of the day.

Otherwise the rules could be used straight out of the book with hardly any modification imo.

There are no rules for aircraft that I can see either... Knew I forgot something earlier!

Laurels of Lafayette If taken all Yank units must remain off board until the game is at least half over. Allows American player to claim all victory points scored by any allied players at end of game.

ANZAC Requisition Form The player may take any one piece of equipment (including weapons, vehicles, cavalry mounts, and artillery) from anywhere on the table (including other players' armies) and add it to his force. The player must loudly profess that it was already there when he found it.

RAMC Royal Army Medical Corps (or Rob All My Comrades) Detachment. Braving all enemy fire these heroic men dash into no-mans land to retrieve watches, wallets and jewelry, to prevent them falling into enemy hands. They may bring back the odd casualty if anyone is watching.

Sgt York One American unit gains +1 to its BS, as spit-wiping your sights with your thumb really does work... honest.

Got the rules today , very pretty , its up to the individual if they like the rules or not . Like the scenario ideas a lot ! I hate having to right scenarios - absalute rubbish at them ! . So will be using their ideas even if I dont use rules , definatly next level up from T&T , so may use them with some 15mm WW1 stuff I have lieing around. :)

There are rules for aircraft, Jim (page 86). They are quite simple and they promise more detailed ones, with stats for different types of plane, in a later book.

So there is... the big letters saying "Army Lists" on the facing page obviously distracted me  :?

Hmmmm-seems a mixed bag; fortunately Gripping Beast has sweetned the deal with a nice figure. The price is a bit steep for just a figure though.

I fear I am still a bit on the fence.

Now if Russians had been made available:

Icon of Boskloskviakov

This sacred icon from the village of Boskloskviakov has been stitched into a banner by the women of the village using their hair as threading. When unfurled it reminds the men of the regiment of the sacrifice at home of their women. Not wanting bald women they find themselves heated with an offensive spirit and unusually stubborn in defesne. Bonuses to any morale test.
Chickens got livers? I'm gettin some!
