Daimler Dingo Mk I Brigade Piron 2nd troop
« on: November 10, 2013, 12:31:06 PM »
Warlord games Daimler with custom made decals by Company B:

Edit: dulled the mud more, I think this is better?:
Edit 2: Dead links, can't seem to get them fixed. Will try again later.

I also put a couple of washes of agrax earthshade on the wheels, It does show, but less on picture.

Nice work on the green tone and the searchlight lens. Also, I quite like the paint chipping effect on the vehicle name.

The dirt looks a bit like it just drove through a chocolate pudding, but that may just be the photo. ;)

Well, I am a bit in doubt about the exact colour for the mud. I used dark fleshtone for it, but perhaps I'm better of with a different tone? I did gloss varnish it to represent it being wet mud, but perhaps the tone should be darker? What would you suggest?

I think you're onto something, it's probably the combination of a light brown and the glossy finish that makes it look a bit strange. Maybe you could use a darker brown or sepia wash to deepen the tone?

Also, you could use the same wash to cover the wheels and in particular the tyres' recesses (with some of the lighter base colour added afterwards) - it does look a bit strange that there is so much mud clinging to the wheels while most of the vehicle is so clean. Maybe put a dark brown wash into the wheel wells, too.

I thought it was jam or blood, like through a horde of zombies!

Otherwise quite nice.

I'm putting it trough some darker washes now. Pictures'll replace the first ones when I'm satisfied with the result. Thanks Chris for your help!

I hope I didn't come across too nit-picky. Mud and dirt are an awfully tricky area to get right in scale and appearance, especially if you want to do heavy buildups - I usually avoid these for fear of not getting it right and instead do an overall discolouration, which is fine for prolonged use, but not for the depiction of "recent" heavy terrain, which you were aiming for.

You were not Chris (nor Grant, for that matter). I replaced the pictures with the 'darker' look. I used charred brown to overpaint the mud. I think it's a better tone, no?

I'd say it is much more realistic now. Maybe you could run a bit of dark brown wash over the very bottom of the hull sides as well as the underside of the hull do tie it in, or add some more splashes of the same tone you used for dulling the mud. There is still quite a contrast between the clean armour plates and the mud that clings to them, but don't overdo it - just a bit to reduce the contrast, but not to mud it up like a happy little pig.

That's the ticket. Great save! It was too much of a red tone before.

Nice model, might think about one myself now...
