Uncle Nurgle's Plague
« on: September 09, 2013, 09:43:14 PM »
I've begun assembling 50 Plaguebearers...

I am also converting Furies using legs and torsos from 40k kroot figs

And heads from undead ghouls

Heads attached

I'll be attaching plastic Tyranid Gargoyle Wings and I will be using Maurader arms with a variety of weapons.

On the horizon are a ton of Nurglings I picked up off of Ebay and a Great Unclean One. I've found a fantastic thread on painting the Plaguebearers using washes and I am excited to get started.
A dash of salt. A pinch of make believe. A dose of wishful thinking. A smidgen of truth. There you now have the recipe for a rumor.

I have been gathering figures from various sources.

Great Unclean One

Herald

Herald

Herald with converted head from this source

Beasts of Nurgle primed black and airbrushed with a base coat of Vallejo Model Air Sand Yellow. Next will be washes starting with GW Sepia.

Since I have 50 Plaguebearers to work with. I will be doing 2 units of 20 and a unit of 25 with full command led by a Herald. I will be creating unit fillers for each unit to fill out the ranks. Each unit filler will take the place of 4 Plague bearers.

Unit Filler

In addition to this fellow I will be using 2 plastic LoTR trolls and I will be modeling sores and blisters on them. I also have about 60 of the Old School Metal Nurglings and I plan to field 10 stands worth of them. I'll also use them as decoration on some of the bases.

Wow this is gonna be epic! Nice start!
Be mindful of the prayers you send
Pray hard but pray with care
For the tears that you are crying now
Are just your answered prayers

The gargoyle wings.

They are the perfect size!

I decided for symmetry I would glue the wings together in a variety of positions so it'd be easier to then attach them to my Furies.

And here are a couple WIP of a Furie that will be flying over a barrel.

And another that's preparing to attack as he lands

And a couple Furies with arms assembled

More to come!

Here is the first of my unit fillers. The troll.

I didn't do any converting because I wanted this model to represent a recently absorbed creature not yet overcome with the taint of Nurgle. I covered the holes where either the heads or drum would be placed. I then green stuffed sores onto areas of the model to represent just the beginnings of infection.

After priming black I airbrushed the Vallejo Model Air Sand Yellow (this color is the main base for all my figures) and after washing with Sepia, and creating my own wash from Matt Medium and Nurgling Green and Athonian Camoshade, plus picking out details he looks like this..

I let the wash settle heavy into the recesses to get that dark grungy look.

The completed model with all the details painted came out like this..

The exact sequence of colors on the troll skin for anyone who might care are:

Sand Yellow Airbrushed over black
Washed with Sepia
Washed with Nurgling Green (the model looked horrible and I thought I had ruined it so the last wash was applied and it worked brilliantly)
Washed Athonian Camoshade

The Herald is a FANTASTIC piece...BEAUTIFULLY modeled & painted. Appropriately enough, he heralds the coming of a WONDROUS Horde of Creations. Don't be daunted by the mass of minis to be done; keep up the FINE WORK!

Here is my 2nd Unit Filler.

Troll with shield.

The first thing I did was position the left arm that would be carrying the shield. The one thing I noticed about this model is that the shield could be placed in a variety of ways. I wanted it to be in an actual place of protection so I used blue tack to hold it in place while I glued the arm into position.

The holes I drilled into the torso for the arrows that'll be placed there.

I wanted it to look like he took an arrow volley and having spare arrows left from my skeletons sprues this was easily achieved.

Like the previous Troll I set about adding sores and open blisters.

And for the first time ever I decided to try out a rare earth magnet to allow the shield with the delicate arrows to be removed for storage and transport.

After priming the model black, I then painted the shield and airbrushed the troll my base color of sand yellow. I think the shield came out really well for such a simple technique. I did a base color of Ironbreaker then picked out the plates in Sycorax Bronze. I then washed everything in Devlan Mud. Done.

I painted him in the same washes as the previous troll and did the arrow feathers in Empire colors.

And with the completed shield added.
