Horses for Gripping Beast Riders
« on: September 03, 2013, 11:39:16 AM »
I've managed to acquire some late Roman cavalry of fleabay. My purchase was a set of riders without horses. What are the options for horses that will fit well?

I'm happy to chop, chisel, dremel and putty (fairly) extensively, so that isn't too much of an issue with choices.

Once upon a time Newline sold spearate horses, so I wondered how they would do, otherwise these

Any others?

Thanks in advance for any help,

M
Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe, hammer to fit, paint to match!

I've successfully used some of the Foundry horses that Mark Sims sculpted for his Viking range. Why not phone up foundry and see if they can help?

Darrell.

At the risk of stating the obvious, how about emailing the Beast for some suitable mounts?

Cheers guys,

the idea of having anything to do with Foundry makes my wallet feel like a turkey at Christmas!

Janner, I had thought about talking to the lads at GB, but wondered about other options. I've got a few of their horses, and I'm not THAT thrilled with them TBH. They're much nicer than (say) TAG, but the older ones I have a bit ordinary. Are the newer ones better?

They are more 'ponyesque', which is probably more historical. If you prefer meatier mounts, the Musketeer ones might be worth a looksee.

A&A do separate horses - for late Roman riders you could probably get some that match fairly well stylistically.

Gripping Beast are using the Ebob horses these days, so you might be able to get some to your liking.

I'm very interested in those EBOB horses too, but apparently you simply can't buy them without an -expensive- license?

I'd go with the eBob sculpts, which are beautiful. You can get them without having to purchase the commercial licence, just go to the "animals" section of his site.

Cheers
Iain.

Iain,
I must be doing something wrong as the only horses on the ' animals' page are fairly modern looking horses with saddles and reins. And 1 rearing horse.
They would definitely be unsuitable for the Gripping Beast Romans.
I'd love to buy several sets of the small and medium horses but can only- as far as I can see- buy them with a licence.
ALready tried some Aventine  Roman horses as I like those very much too but GB riders didn't fit very well.

I used some of the GW LotR horses (Perry Sculpts) for some of my GB/BT arabs.
They're nice and due to featuring in the part-works you can probably pick them up quite cheaply on e-bay.
The only downside is metal man on plastic horse with weak ankles syndrome.
