Victorian Lamp Posts
« on: September 20, 2013, 06:11:12 PM »
Hello,
I've been making some Victorian Lampposts in 28mm scale. I've made three posts (small - medium - large) with two lamps (small- large) and also a tiny wall light. They are all taken from some plans that were sent to me by a model train hobbyist (I've also made the lampposts in TT and HO scale) and I thought I'd share my progress and ask a couple of questions.

First off, I made the posts and lamps in a clear resin with the idea that - if needed - a light could be shone through the bottom of the post and light up the lamp at the top! As you can see in the attached image below, I painted the posts with a base of silver paint (to help block out the light shining through the post and also to reflect light inside a bit) and then painted the post black with a grey drybrush. Shining the light through the posts kind of works for the smaller two of the posts but not for the largest one, unfortunately.

Another problem is that the posts are so thin that the resin tends to snap very easy, with the largest post especially, and as I plan to sell these, putting these lampposts in the post will be probably very bad for the posts! Also, they will be difficult to move around the game board and store without breaking. So I was wondering, are gamers like yourself interested in having clear resin posts to try and light up or wouldn't you mind having white metal posts with a clear resin lamp on top! The white metal will be far faster to cast and not break in the post and the biggest post doesn't light up anyway. Here's a pic of the medium post in clear and white metal...

Also, I have not made any bases for them as I don't know what layout they may be going on. Large paving stones, small paving stones, cobbles. Maybe I could also make a series of Victorian city bases but I think there are plenty of people making them already. If there are any specific bases you need, give me a shout!

I think that at this scale making the posts in white metal with clear resin lamps is the way to go, but what do you think? Also do you want them to have bases or is that not really a problem?

Oh, here are pictures of the little 7mm wide x 8mm high x 5mm deep wall lamps. They are tiny...

Thanks for reading!

Splendid workmanship.  Price dependant I would prefer white metal.

shipping in resin might be a problem, but GAMING with resin lamps... that would be a suicide.

Your sculpting is beautiful!

I think it is more realistic to plan for the regular wargamer who wants stable lamp posts

I've been looking forward to these since our ebay conversation!  8)

I think for gaming purposes, the metal posts with the clear resin tops are the best of both worlds as you still get the appearance of glass lamps and the sturdiness required for a gaming piece. Lighting is cool for a fixed setup (like railway or diorama), but let's face it, we're not going to play games in the dark.

I'd say white metal too. They look great. I'd suggested street lamps too so it's great to see them.

I'd go the white metal route also.

Geez, those look great. Another vote for the mixed white metal bottoms/clear resin tops here.
