I am waiting for some hardware which I have ordered for my lorries, meanwhile I decided to paint some stalwart sikhs for my Indian Army battalion.

You have taken those Sikhs to a wonderful finish.
The building looks good too.

Some of you may remember that I have an affinity for soldering when I convert figures and models. In this case I've been meaning to create a frame for the canopies of my Crossley IGLs. Unfortunately, I have run into a problem, which both vexes and puzzles me.

I have made a template out of plywood, to the shape of the supports which will keep the canopy up. Over the edges of the template I have first heated, and then bent a length of 1.5x1.5mm solid square profile brass rod.

The first 'kink', from vertical to the curved horizontal piece, and second, to create a ridged top, causes no problems. But as I bent the last section, the rod invariably snapped off, no matter that I heated them good with the torch...!

What the fuck..?  Three times I have tried to bend them all with the same ruddy result: the third bending results in that it snaps off at the angle. I am now running low on rod because of this. The rods cost about €7,5 per 500mm and and it takes about a week for an order to arrive to this desolate island.  :-[

I really thought I knew how to do this. I am in consternation what causes this and would appreciate any advice. Could it be that the tension in the outer surface finally get too strained? Should I use square pipe rod, a more narrow width, or be more careful in my choice if brass?

I concur, delightful and delicious brushwork ;D

No idea about your bending brass predicament. I'm sure someone more learned than I will be along with a solution.

Have you tried just bending it cold?
Where does the rod snap?
Is it one of the places you have already affected with heat that it is breaking?

Great continuation  :)

The rod seems overly priced. I’ll have a look for something a bit cheaper.
cheers

Yes, it's at a heat spot. Brass disperse heat quit well, I have not used any heat sink clips.

It's postage included which is almost as much as the material since I only ordered 2x500mm. Which I regret no.

But thanks, Jim, I'd appreciate another source. It is quite possible that the brass in what I've used is sub par (there could be zink or some other crap in it). I am also considering a 1mm square rod as it is more likely to bend cold.

Brass rod...hmm.   How about a metal cloth hanger?

Now I have tried bending and using various permutations of square 1.5 mm brass material and finally came to this: be glad of what can be bent, mend what can be mended.

Now, to economize I used what lengths I had, used my template and bent and soldered wire for super structures. As you can see I used a jig to ensure some sort of conformity between the lorries.

Effin' hell, I made a misscalculation/miss-think about the first jig and it became shorter than it should be....

For all the frustration in your materials and foul words said in their production, these frames look really nice.
