FIW Cavalry
« on: September 24, 2013, 01:33:34 PM »
Yes, I know, they really didn't exist, but.....

I'm thinking of having a small group of French to represent the Quebec cavalry and using some Light Dragons as opposition.

Anyone else done this?

I have used Parkfield Cavalry in my games for years now as dragoons
http://glynrr.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/french-indian-wars-part-5.html
French and
Virginia light horse
Albany  light horse
Albany governor mounted  guard
Only the enemies figures are in the front of you now a good time to get some good dice throws

So, what you have is all the fun of a European game with the added quirks of Indians, Rangers and Militia!  :o

Love the setup, by the way, I don't expect to get so big, but two brigades of Infantry and some cavalry on each side will give a good game.

I had some AW cavalry that I was never going to use so a vague mention of a provincial cavalry unit was all the cause I needed to paint up a small squadron for my French and Indian Wars collection.

I think 6 man units are about right, they represent a squadron of regulars or militia, and I am not sure that the land allowed or the transport could handle large bodies of cavalry. (This also makes them cheaper to buy and faster to paint).

I have picked up some decent deals on eBay lately!  :D

Dave, now I appreciate armies of pure metal which require minimal preparation!  :o

Dixon Miniatures offers F&IW cavalry figures.  I use those for my F&IW games.  Although, I have not been able to find much historical reference for their presence in combat.

I do not believe that there were any REAL cavalry units, there were certainly no REGULAR British or French Cavalry.  The best they had would have been mounted militiamen as scouts, the only real exception were a 200 man Quebec unit that was absent and played no part in the battle. The heavily wooded areas and lack of grazing precluded cavalry.  I travelled through Vermont and New Hampshire in the summer and there was little to see but trees........

Still, they are a nice addition to a FIW game and give it the feel of a European war with all the fun of other troops.

I wonder if you could get some dismounted :D as that would make for a nice skirmish, ambushed column for you in games :)

Front Rank do SYW dismounted dragoons and Perrys do dismounted Light dragoons in the AWI range.
