3d Heroquest Project - UPDATE - new board pictures Page 3
« on: September 28, 2013, 02:58:44 PM »
I have been planning to work on some dungeon crawling figures and terrain for a while and bought the reaper bones Kickstarter package and some Ainsty terrain.

I also picked up a cheap copy of Heroquest a while back but hadn't played it until last weekend.  I really enjoyed the game and realised with all the extra quests available and addons it would be the perfect system for what I wanted.

So, I am working on a new project to create the Heroquest game in 3-d using Ainsty dungeon pieces.

So far I have created a board base from two pieces of foamboard covered in ferro-sheeting.  it is 4' x 3' and folding in the middle.  I then created a set of magnetically backed card pieces to form a border around the Heroquest playing area.

The picture above shows a quick test of some of the terrain pieces I've finished.  I am painting them dark grey, light grey dry-brush and then Supershader black wash.

I have also started painting up the heroes and other pieces from the basic Heroquest game.  More pictures once they are finished.

I'm quite excited by doing this - need quite a lot more dungeon terrain though to create even a basic board (I have another basic floor set to paint and a lot of walls!).

LOOKIN' GOOD! Even at this early stage, this has a lot of potential. In my AD&D Days, having my Little Adventurers explore detailed model dungeons was a favorite dream/project that in reality always lost the battle for table space to the dips & chips. That aside, keep up the SPLENDID WORK!

Great idea about using magnets, they're so versatile. I can't wait to see what else you come up with  8)

What a lovely idea.  It's also nice that you have a simple format/layout which you can work with.  I think the Ainsty stuff is pretty brilliant, though the whole project may be a bit expensive.  I can't wait to follow this.  Perhaps if they do the 25th Anniversary Hero Quest game you'll have some great new furniture and minis with it!

Thanks for the comments.

I am adding magnaflex to the base of all the dungeon pieces to help hold them in place. Nothing is more annoying then when your whole dungeon moves!

In order to recreate the Heroquest board I have had to add some extra squares to the corridors.  The rooms can remain the same size, but in HQ the walls have no thickness.  In the Ainsty system everything is based on a 3cm grid, so the walls are 3cm across (including the edge pieces on each side).  This meant adding extra square so the board is now 34 squares across by 25 squares down.

I contemplated painting lines on to the dungeon floors but have decided to go with inches instead for movement and I'm also keeping all the floors grey rather than painting as per the HQ board as it makes the pieces more flexible.

I have started on the figures:

The Elf, Barbarian and Dwarf are done.  The Wizard is nearly finished and I've started on the Mummies and Skeletons.

The first room is done.  This is where the heroes start with the spiral staircase.

This is a quick picture, lighting isn't that great so everything seems a bit washed out.  I'll take some better photos as I get more stuff done.

Now are you going to be laying out squares?  Because I can't make out any 'spaces' in that room...? I can vaguely make out some square tiles which look like they'd each be about four squares?
