Just seen this thread on 10mm...if you are looking for Napoleonics I can recommend Magister Militum. I must have about 2500 of the buggers painted....

Painting them is a doddle even I can make that happen....only a few have ever made it onto the blog but there is small set of pictures here...

If I remember rightly the two ranges mentioned are 10mm to the eye ?

For 1/200 they need to be about 9mm from sole to scalp.

I am going to have a go at sculpting some pirates  ..... If it doesn't work out I might need to compromise.... :D
My LAF Gallery is HERE
Minis (foot & mounted) finished in 2024 = 32
(2023 = 151; 2022 = 204; 2021 = 123; 2020 = ???)

Blimey - do you think that 1mm would make that much difference?  :o  ;)

The Pendraken new 10mm League of Augsburg figures look like they might fit the bill rather well  :)

No not at all,,,,,,,  I appear to be typing nonsense  :o

Looking back my post reads sniffy but it wasn't meant like that (and sorry Giles for what must have read like ingratitude!).

My sleep deprived brain is somewhat befuddled but I think I had it in my head that the difference is about 3 to 4 mm.  No idea if that is right or not so I best shut up until I get hold of some figures ..... I shall check out Pendraken.   :D

Now the thread gets busy  lol

Thanks for the offer Giles about buildings but I think I've got this one covered  ;)

I like the idea about the ship damage Steve but it might be a tad over the top. How about a number of smoke counters representing the amount of damage: One for light damage, two for medium and so on.

Three to four figures on a base with one or two for command?

What's the time line we're aiming at as well, it'll help the builds.

cheers

Me..... Getting carried.... Going over the top.... Taking it to far..., as if I've ever been accused of that before  lol

I think you're right tho James, some sort of smoke market would be better!  :D.

Pendraken have a pirates question on their forum that makes some useful comment about which of their ranges to use

http://www.pendrakenforum.co.uk/index.php/topic,322.0.html

I think tho they are 1/150 which makes a 1.8m man 12mm tall versus the 9mm of 1/200 - which I now remember is where I got my 3mm difference from.

I think 1:150 would be too big for the boats ... They come out so much bigger than 1/200 which will restrict sea space. I got hold of some true 1/200 dollies and they look right up against the ships as to whether the larger figures would be noticeably different, the only way to find out is to try some... :D

Steve,

If the ships will need that much work to make them suitable, then why not upscale to 10mm?  Commercially available minis can then be used for crew/dressing.  ???

As for damage representation, I think smoke counters on the board and an A4/5 template per ship off board showing crew casualties, above/below waterline damage, fires etc. would be good.  If we only have two or three ships each, the paperwork shouldn't interfere with the game but will give more character to how the ships work against each other.

Thinking more, if you used smoke counters that stayed on the board, you would be left with areas of heavy smoke you couldn't see through or shoot with any accuracy.  Ships on fire putting out even more smoke as they move.  :D

Right now I've got that long list out of  the way....

Nice ideas Kev :D ;D

So decision time..... Stick with 1/200 or go to 1/150?

Don't let that I have bought 4 x 1/200 ships sway you as they'll always be used for something

Ironically 1/150 brings the 1/120 smer Black Falcon into play, which was the original point of this thread!

I shall post up side by side shots of the hull in a mo

As you say Steve, think the only thing to do would be to try a pack of Pendraken figures and see if they look ludicrously large against the ships and boats. They do seem to have quite a good range of suitable figures though...

Alternatively, I suspect many of the so-called 6mm ranges are actually more like 8mm, so maybe that would be a better option.

But hey, it's your project - I'm just shooting the breeze :)

(I'm starting to get quite tempted though, especially by the thought of all that lovely scenery James is going to make...  ;))

Presumably you'll be cutting the ships' hulls down to turn them into waterline models?

Hey James, we're winding him in!  ;D

An expanse of ocean, jagged coastline and sun kissed beaches with surf breaking on the shore. Palm trees galore.  Harbours, forts and deserted islands.  Ships frantically positioning to lay their guns, ne'er do wells rowing ashore to cut throats or wet appetites......

1700's it is then.

What's the respective lengths of those Steve?

I don't mind scale wise but I think 1/150 will prove the better choice. Room for more detail and I've already got a few sourced images of forts etc that should prove useful  :D

It's a shame the Pendraken guns have no picture.

Like the idea of a ship template but it does need to be kept simple, something along GW's Man'O'War rules might do the trick  ??? (I've got a copy if you need the reference).

cheers

James
