Testors Clearcoat vs Dullcoat
« on: October 19, 2013, 05:58:22 PM »
Are these the same product?
I used to use Testors Dullcoat, but none of my local options seem to carry it anymore, instead I can only find Testors Clearcoat.  Do people use this to seal their miniatures?

You're in NS? Michaels carries Testor's Dullcoat here in Canada, eh.

I think the Clear is gloss and Dull is matt, as mentioned.

Michaels is where I usually got it before.
But the last 5 times or so, it has not been in stock (mind you, the Testors stock at Michaels is a bit of a mess) and it was the first time I had seen clear coat.   I'll try a different Michaels perhaps and hope for better.

Turns out that Clear Coat is the Dullcoat now (they changed the packaging, but if you look hard enough, you can still find the Dullcoat annotation.

From what I can gather, the Clear Coat seems to be a lacquer specifically for cars - so presumably a gloss finish.

The Dullcote is a (very) matt finish hobby lacquer.

I don't know if that's just a mixed up lid on the pic, but since the Testors site still seems to be listing them separately, I'm not convinced they're the same thing. Of course, tomorrow they may announce that they are and I'll look like a giant eejit.

Thanks for the warning.  This is why I've been hesitant to jump in and use this.

Just test it out on something unimportant first.
