Anyone make royal marines?
« on: November 10, 2013, 04:20:35 PM »
I have been watching Pirates of the Caribbean and I was wondering if anyone made royal marines for pirate era in 28mm

The only ones I have found is the Black Scorpion but they are a bit too big... the rest of my collection are wargames foundry and Redoubt.
Theres more 28mm Superhero Madness at my blog, http://fourcoloursupers.blogspot.com/
And for Ultra-modern Wargaming check out Hotel Zugando at http://ultramoderngaming.blogspot.co.uk/

I assume you are referring to a period from about 1700 to 1750. The Royal Marines were not formed until 1755, before that time ship board soldiers were part of the British army, whole regiments being assigned at a time for sea service and were equipped and uniformed exactly as per any shore based regiment.  I would suggest Front Rank or Ebob's War Of the Spanish Succession Infantry a good place to start your search for suitable figures.

Ebor Grenadiers are prob yer best bet. The Uniforms in Pirates of the Caribbean are too late for the most active years of the Pirates as we know them.

Do you want 'accurate', 'close enough' or Hollywood? Presuming that you want marines for the early 18thC  then your most accurate option is probably the OG ones from their Marlburian range. Not a great fan of Old Glory myself but they will at least fit with Foundry. Then of course there are the old Foundry grenadiers. Ebor look to be about the nicest current range of Marlburians out there, so their grenadiers would be another option.

Black Scorpion are pure Hollywood and anything AWI ish would give you a reasonable facsimile of that style. Marines didn't become 'Royal' until 1802 btw.

We use Front Rank grenadiers to represent Marines in our pirate games.

That might explain why I couldn't find any then.  ;)

Nice figures in that last post by the way.

The Royal Navy range from Black Cat Bases is designed to be accurate for the Golden Age of Piracy. Of course, they are just as too large as the Black Scorpion figures.
