I'm getting started on painting some Great War Miniatures, including the very nice Stokes mortar. While I've been able to find plenty of B&W photos of the thing, they aren't that helpful in telling me what colour it was. The only colour photo I've found is of a blackened mortar in a French museum:

One more question - based on a couple of sketches from Osprey books, I've assumed that ammunition boxes were not painted - I've gone with a basic wood colour for mine. Does this sound right?
Thanks in advance,
Will
