Perry 8th Army Plastics - First Contact
« on: October 22, 2013, 07:53:24 AM »
A bit of a report on my first experiences with their WWII plastics can be fund here:

http://toofatlardies.co.uk/blog/?p=1936

As always I have tried to look at pros and cons and detail some of the specific issues I came up against.

I hope it proves useful to someone who may be considering whether plastics are right for them.

Interesting review Rich and at risk of coming across as a fanboy (ok I'm a perry plastic fanboy!  :D) I think you can pin the blame for a lot of your troubles onto your tools.

A pair of side cutters are worth their weight in plastic .... Without them pieces will bend, snap and generally cost time and damage to remove.

The glue. The 'yellow and blue' Revell cement in a pot with a needle applicator is the business. Apply to one side, push together, pause a second or so, let go, job done.

To be honest I didn't realise I was having troubles.   :D

I am working my way through the Germans now.  The process is a bit simpler as I have more of a production line going with a few "time and motion" ideas applied which do speed things up.  I'm also being a bit more daring with some of the conversions this time.

I'll post a report when I have them all prepped, but at the moment I am enjoying the process.  I just need a hole in the clouds to get undercoating!

I did massive conversions with the Desert Rats box (I had three boxes) and found them remarkably easy to work with, and converted nicely:

Rich, great to see you finally took the plunge. I assume you're gearing up for the North Africa lists? ;)
I found the Perry plastics not to be the easiest fit - but definitely better than some others in the market. Unfortunately, as a beginner, I had no WW2 bits at hand, thus went with builds straight from the box. But you could do a lot more as demonstrated on this thread - very nice conversions there. Thanks for sharing!

Grant, it was your report and pictures which prompted me to get back to the job and finish it off!  So thanks for the motivation.

Doc, I must admit that I found some bits fiddly and a few gaps were inevitable, but generally green stuff more than compensated and I am very pleased with the end result.  I am working on the Germans today and it is great to be able to build "proper" force, so my German LMG teams each have two men carrying ammunition, whereas you just couldn't do that with metal.

The desert lists are pretty much ready, but I am trying to avoid much time on the computer as I've had a headache for two weeks solid.  The Doctors are running tests.  Once I get back to work full time I will post them.  If I'm not dead.

Cheers

 :D Glad I motivated someone, somewhere!  ;)

I was kind of like you: I had built one, and they sat in a pile, until I realized I also had all the stuff to make the support weapons. I think my Desert Rats live in New Zealand now. Much nicer there than Canada...

Thanks for the review.  Now that I have found myself involved in 28mm WW2 (already doing enough in 15mm!), I may have to give the Perry boys a look.   :)
